Tin top turbo problems?
jabs - 9/12/10 at 12:12 PM

Son in law has just been around with his vauxhall zafira gsi - 2l turbo and it has an odd problem. He says it lacks power and on tickover it's like it's got asthma, every second or so it's like it's taking a gulp of air - tick over is constant. The pipe between the intercooler and the engine also flex's. If you rev it this pipe appears to collapse a bit for a short time. Don't think it's the turbo as no smoke or screeching noises from it

Anybody got any clues as to the possible problem - what ever it is it will be expensive - lol

If it's drawing the IC to throttle pipe closed then it sounds like a blockage in the I/C.

You could try taking this pipe off and starting it and letting it idle without the turbo and I/C in line, if it idles much better without sounding like it's choking then I'd bypass the I/C and run it like that to see if it's blocked or failing that remove the I/C and check for blockages.

Many cars have the MAP sensors on the I/C exit so if you do bypass it then don't go driving it around to test it as when it comes on boost it'll probably go into limp mode.

The OE "rubber" pipes on turbo installations tend to go soggy after a time and draw inwards restricting flow.
Simplest/cheapest first option is to replace them with new OE or aftermarket ones to eliminate them from the equation.
On SAABs Abbot Racing supply metal pipes to replace the OE "rubber" ones for that very reason.
HTH.

First thing I'd do is pull out the air filter. Cheap stuff first!

Done that - no different

He's got it booked into local garage for tomorrow morning so lets see what they can find out
