How about an A4 Quattro. Nice S-Line version for sale here:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201028363517743/sort/pricedesc/usedcars/body-type/estate/fuel-type/diesel/price-to/12000/model/a4/make/a udi/postcode/sl97ru/keywords/quattro/radius/1501/page/1?logcode=p

Doesn't say what the mileage is - I suspect it's high for that price.

I've got the A6 with the same engine and transmission as in that. I can get 38 to the gallon out of it, so I suspect the lighter A4 will break into 40mpg.

Also a software tweak will get it to 285bhp and 560ft/lbs which is fun in an A6 (I speak from experience), so in an A4 it should be even better!

Wouldn't touch Keighley with a barge pole. I drove up there (Near Skipton) to look at an 02 A4 Avant a couple of years ago. Again, no mileage advertised, was priced around 6k. It had 18" wheels and on the sheet for the car it said it had 99k on the clock. I checked the VOSA website and the last MOT, 12 months ago had it down at 170k. The car itself was tatty looking, bits of trim hanging off, scratched and overal not very well presented. The alloys were all chipped and kerbed. I tried to discuss the mileage issue with a member of staff and I was dismissed saying the database must be wrong (?)

I know it's probably been mentioned before, but if you're going to look at a car, be it private or trade, bookmark this page:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Mot/DG_10020539 and check the MOT history out using the V5C reference number. Easiest way to check to see if it's been clocked. If you've got a smartphone its very easy to do it there and then

I'm not sure that they do.
as I understand it, the diesel one is the only X type which is strictly 2wd.

And how many miles do they get between engine and turbo replacements.

Renault has gone down in history for destroying Nissan's bullet proof reputation.

I was working on a Nissan Note last week the engine ECU is fitted with the plug and wiring facing up the way with the wiring not properly sealed or protected, you lift the bonnet in bad weather and water runs off the bonnet striaight on to the ECU plug.

morcus - 9/1/11 at 08:30 AM

Check this months top gear mag, you could get yourself a brand new Lada Niva, though it won't do 40MPG.

What do you actually want the 4WD for? As you don't seem to want an off roader and given the other requirements I'd have thought you'd be better off just just getting a 2WD car.

For the Record the Panda is a great car and for your budget you could have a new one and do 40 plus on petrol, and if you drive one wearing an oldman hat, people stop and move to let you pull out and don't tailgate you (You have to wear the hat though. It all goes back to normal when you take off the hat). I'm told the Hat trick works in Micras aswell.

T66 - 9/1/11 at 07:39 PM

Only 15mpg

£115 Fully Comp Insurance

Goes anywhere - Can be fixed with sticky tape, fencing wire and a selection of hammers.

And yes it pulled the Corsa out of the ditch ....

PS Top picture - choke out, pure petrol pouring out the exhaust...

thunderace - 9/1/11 at 07:42 PM

she would not be seen dead in the panda so i dont see much hope you the lada lol

No tick tock , its drives really nice - just like the last time I drove a half track.

My wife hated the Lada, ugly smelly thing, however after two heavy winters, Tatiana is the dogs knob all terrain, all weather transport .....

When the world grinds to a halt because of the snow, the Niva steps up to the plate.

The Landy 90 parked behind me 2nd pic , couldnt follow the Niva up the next stage of the RTV trial - Dergs Nerb

In fact neither did the one infront !

Ninehigh - 10/1/11 at 08:05 PM

I'd have thought the Octavia would have got 40, or at least high 30's if you're heavy footed.

Bora/Passat?

Volvorsport - 10/1/11 at 08:25 PM

its a nearly car .

http://www.dicomwg12.org/mpg/VOLVO/V70-Model-Year-06/D5-AWD/

my volvo does about 30 mpg petrol , i would have thought the diesel being about 4p a litre more expensive needs to be doing around 50 mpg to make it worthwhile

Dave Ashurst - 11/1/11 at 06:00 AM

My Subaru legacy diesel does around 50mpg. 52 on a long run, 48 in daily use. It's currently showing 48.7mpg avg over the last 3700 miles after hoofing it about, including through the snow and ice last month.

Ninehigh - 13/1/11 at 09:13 PM

I'd be interested to find out what you actually go for

thunderace - 13/1/11 at 10:04 PM

AUDI A3 2.0 TDi 170 Quattro S Line ,is now top of my list.
im going to take a test drive for 2-3hrs to see what sort of mpg i get from it.

eddie99 - 13/1/11 at 10:06 PM

My parents are also having this discussion at the moment, they had an x type but they don't like it. I have sent them to look at the audi a3 quattro. Let us know what you thought.

I drove a Black Edition 2wd version of the above car from York to Glasgow and back again yesterday at legal speeds and got an easy 55mpg.

mad4x4 - 14/1/11 at 12:55 PM

My question would be what are you looking for there is a lot of difference between a 4x4 Pickup or Landrover and a Diesel Impretza or 4x4 Golf.

What are you using it for
Why do you need 4x4
What size of car do you need
What type of car - saloon / estate / MPV

A good Skoda Diesel or an Audi Diesel will get 50+ to the gallon but not 4x4 but saying that you wouldn;t take it up a field
however a Range Pickup / L200 etc will get 32 to the gallon and will tow 1-3 tons and go across fields.

A Skoda Diesel would not be suiatble for a Farmer or a Fencer to use as a work vehicle
simalarly a L200 would not be handy if you were a motorway REP or were alway about town.

I wouldn;t look for a car that was 4x4 and 40 Plus to the gallon, I would narrow it down to cars I like then work out which best suits my needs. if MPG is important then consider this.

i think the fact that i says it all in the title ?
""im looking for a car that is 4wd and you can get 40mpg ?""

JUST FOR YOU

What are you using it for-DRIVING
Why do you need 4x4-COZ THATS WHAT I WANT
What size of car do you need-ANY
What type of car - saloon / estate / MPV CAR
