I'm looking to build a box cart for my son and nephew to race in a local event later this year. The race is held in a cow field so even though they mow the grass very short it's still pretty bumpy. Last year carts with anything smaller than a BMX wheel really struggled and the winning cart was running 13" car wheels/tyres.

I'm thinking along the lines of mountain bike size wheels and possibly some form of suspension to improve the ride/speed of the cart.

Anyone bult something similar or can point me towards some plans?

I have a welder and some steel to make a chassis if that's the way to go.

Nick, I've given this a bit of thought in the past and came to the conclusion that large wheels with plenty of weight to give load of inertia is the best way forward. Reasonably thin section tyres to reduce friction. Something like 2cv wheels which I believe are 135 15 or something like that would be good on the back and pram wheels or small bike tyres on the front.

2CV wheels would be ideal, possibly front and back to cope with the rough ground.

One option open to me is to use lawn tractor tyres as my dad runs a garden machinery business I have access to quite a selection of these. These would be very easy to mount on a fabricated axle/chassis assembly and although wider profile than I'd like, they do have the advantage of adding an element of cushioning to the ride.

Never needed plans to make one when I was a kid, Afew bits of wood, a pair of large pram wheels on the rear and small on the front, nut and bolt for the steering swivel and a bot of rope for the steering. Those were the days!!
