The perils of biking...
flak monkey - 29/1/11 at 11:58 PM

Biker films his commute over 3 months and reduces it to 3 mins of the worst bits...

Had a few similar 'moments' myself

Some of the traffic light ones are awful...

Ninehigh - 30/1/11 at 12:50 AM

Didn't really see much wrong with half of it, the reocurring junction could be a case of very little time between going on red for the cars and going on green for him, and a few going late on red.

Oh and a couple of pedestrians already being halfway across..

slingshot2000 - 30/1/11 at 12:55 AM

That is so bad I am going to have to go to bed and think about it!

What the f()ck happened to common sense?

Darwin awardzzz?

Who the 4q gives them licences ??

A1 - 30/1/11 at 03:40 AM

most of that happens to us all, not just bikers...some dodgy jumping lights though!

ps, bikers do get it a bit rough though, so i always try to be nice to them

omega0684 - 30/1/11 at 06:58 AM

.....................and thats why i don't ride a motorbike!

Snuggs - 30/1/11 at 07:15 AM

Anyone who jumps a red light is a complete moron and does not deserve to be on the road

All major light controlled junctions (and many others) should be fitted with red light cameras and anyone caught should be charged with dangerous driving.

I have no sympathy for anyone killed or injured because they jumped a red light.

Unfortunately in this country, too many people do not know that amber means STOP.

JoelP - 30/1/11 at 08:23 AM

that junction where everyone is jumping the lights, there must be something wrong with the timing. If not, then there needs to be some ticketing!

Richard Quinn - 30/1/11 at 08:56 AM

I don't know whether there is a separate "right turn" lane and lights at that junction (wasn't watching too closely) but around here it is normally the ordinary 4-way lights that would appear similar in terms of the issues in the video. We see it quite a lot - couple of cars pulled forward but waiting to turn right and can't because of the steady stream of traffic coming towards them. The lights turn to amber and the cars waiting to turn right now get ready to move but a kn0b or two in the oncoming traffic decide that it's "only amber" so continue across leaving the right-turners stuck in the middle of the junction. The lights have now turned red against the right-turners but they are in the middle of the junction. Do they stay where they are blocking at least one lane or do they clear the junction on the assumption that the cars about to pull way will have seen them stuck in the middle of the junction directly in front of them and wait a bit for them to clear?
Although I know that there is some shocking driving on the video, if that's worst that's happened in 3 months then he should count his blessings. Also, given the fact that it is not possible to see the full picture using a video camera, it may not actually be as bad as it looks as there wouldn't have been too many surprises assuming he wasn't just staring straight ahead like the camera.

flak monkey - 30/1/11 at 09:13 AM

Theres a couple of bits at the junction where you can see the reflection of the red light and count how many cars go through it....

I know most of it doesnt just apply to bikes. At least the rider checks if anything has skipped the light before moving off, which a lot of people dont.

morcus - 30/1/11 at 09:24 AM

Some of that traffic light stuff is pretty scary. He should send the video to the police if theres that much light jumping as they'd have an easy time booking people.

There are enough people who don't check to see if anythings coming on round abouts, let alone traffic lights. I'm with the guy a couple of post ahead, why do we even bother with the amber light any more as everyone reacts to it the complete oposite so how they're supposed to?

Daddylonglegs - 30/1/11 at 09:40 AM

Those are just some of the reasons I am quitting biking after over 30 years

I decided after last year when yet another clutch of idiots either on their mobiles or just out to score as many 'biker' points as possible tried to wipe me out!

I love my bikes, used to love biking and the comraderie it brings, but the time has come to say enough is enough. I just hope I can get as much fun from my locost as I did from my bike.

For those brave enough to continue, take it easy and treat everyone else as an idiot, 'cos there are plenty to choose from.

Peteff - 30/1/11 at 09:51 AM

That's how the lights work in Dublin. It's manic in the centre where the buses are still doing 40mph through red lights and pedestrian crossings.

MakeEverything - 30/1/11 at 10:17 AM

As bikers, we should assume that its all going to happen anyway. The maker of the film obviously does by his relaxed riding style.

Ive had loooooads of close ones like the ones in the vid. Even ran a pedestrial over once because she refused to believe that the traffic would move when the lights went green and the crossing was clear. She dashed across as i put the brakes on, and she met with the front headlight of a 1200 bandit!

Just think that everyone is out to kill you, and keep good all round awareness.

rf900rush - 30/1/11 at 11:23 AM

Some bikers it will end. Dead, or if you are a bit more lucky , just no bike to ride.

Amber means prepare to stop unless it is not safe to do so, It is legal to go through an amber light.

I thought it meant, "quick floor it, I might make it!"

(joke)

That left turn and the parking ones are the best, I commuted for about 5 years on bikes, you see some dumb stuff. Not that I'd ever bother strapping a camera to myself to film it, how boring must that editing have been!

Having been knocked off my motorbike by an idiot going through a red, and then claiming it was amber, I wish there were more cameras. Fortunatly a witness stopped and left his details.

Wish I'd pressed charges now, but that the time she was all "I'm sooooo sorry, blah blah blah", then one word from her husband and suddenly I;m the one who can't navigate the roads safely.

Red means stop unless it's unsafe to do so too, and when I'm doing 65 and I'm 20 foot from the red light it's unsafe for me to stop!

On the other side of this green doesn't mean "Go ahead, it is clear enough for you to not have to check for yourself"

morcus - 31/1/11 at 03:00 AM

Theres a set of lights in the town where the police often do speed traps on because so many people speed up to jump the lights before the next set of people can set off, and as a result the bit infront of the lights is never clear so noone actually gets anywhere.

As my driving instructor used to say, 'If your gonna get out, you've got to be prepared to do something serious and take what they might throw back at you'. It's a good maxim for such situations, and perhaps he just couldn't be bothered but I think If i'd been driving a bike with a camera on it and someone cut across to start parking I'd have words (I've had someone do this to me in the car, which was scary enough when they just moved infront on a empty road and stopped).
