"Medium diesel"
Ninehigh - 11/2/11 at 05:56 PM

Place I'm working at has these barrels of "medium diesel"

Just looked it up and it turns out this is Red diesel.

Now, I'm here all night, on my own, and there's a hand pump sticking out of one of the barrels.

If you was in my situation, and let's say for the sake of argument that the site manager has given me permission to half-inch some overnight, would you stick a few litres in your car? I'm not talking filling the tank, just the canful (in a 60l tank)

big_wasa - 11/2/11 at 06:02 PM

I shift thousands a litres a day of this stuff.

If you get spot checked they will squash your car into a cube. They even go around super markets with cotton buds and rub them around the exhaust and test it.

Never rip of the tax man its a bigger crime than murder

On the other side of it. Most cars will run fine on it and some around this way have done so for years.
Its not just white with a dye, its not aswell refined as white.

wylliezx9r - 11/2/11 at 06:03 PM

Personally being the law abiding governement loving person that I am...........................I'd fill the whole fecking tank up !

owelly - 11/2/11 at 06:04 PM

Don't do it! During the 2000 fuel crisis I had to queue up to get a rationed 10 litres like everyone else even though I had 2,000,000 litres or MFO (red diesel) sat at work!
It only takes a random fuel tank dip check point at some point in the future and you'll be in court for tax evasion which is a civil offence, not a motoring offence. Trained noses can smell red exhaust fumes!!

snapper - 11/2/11 at 06:06 PM

Add a drop of petrol to it, it won't be red anymore

It will still be red! You can filter it through fullers earth which will remove the dye but it will still test positive. Mixing red diesel with green diesel also removes the colour but not the dye trace!

T66 - 11/2/11 at 06:20 PM

Mugs game mate - pay for it like the rest of us......

Might as well not tax your car or insure it while your on.

We pay for that aswell, including those who dont bother.

You cannot mask using red diesel, if theres any doubt they will pull your filters off.

Life is hard enough, keep it simple

Peteff - 11/2/11 at 06:28 PM

If the duty is paid on it you can use red diesel for the road but you have to prove that the duty is paid.

thunderace - 11/2/11 at 06:29 PM

told my mate he was useing red he asked how the hell do you know ?
i told him i can smell it he was shocked ,
then he said he filtterd it with cat litter and it was no longer red ?
lol it was still red to me

Ninehigh - 11/2/11 at 06:30 PM

It could be that easy to get caught? I've never seen anyone doing checks (even during the taxi mot where they say they check for it as part of the test)

dave r - 11/2/11 at 06:35 PM

went to a off road show once, and they were checking every 4X4 in the carpark

Ninehigh - 11/2/11 at 06:36 PM

So not even worth risking a small amount then... No problem

HowardB - 11/2/11 at 06:47 PM

I've seen them doing spot checks on the Mull of Kintyre, all diesel vehicles were being stopped and checked.

I'd say it's not worth the risk.

You must have a way better nose than me then, I've worked on nearly every type of plant that runs on diesel both white and red and there is no difference to my nose.

There is a huge amount of nonsense spoken about red diesel with regard to stained filters, tanks, and fuel lines. I couldn't say that there is no chemical marker present but there is certainly no red dye left behind.

I wouldn't risk running red in any vehicle which is likely to be "dipped", so if you ever g to car auctions, farms or building sites or anywhwere else that red diesel maybe available, also wouldn't touch it if your motor looks a bit tatty especially if it's a van or 4x4.

Often see tanks getting dipped at the local farmers market and there seems to be increased dipping when the gyppos are near when it comes to show season!!!

Ah now this was my thinking, it's a normal family car

The question is I've never been tested so far (since 1997) so what are the chances of getting tested later (knowing my luck 99%)

ali f27 - 11/2/11 at 07:44 PM

Kind of all depends if you have new rangerover probs not get stopped if you have older car van will be stopped

Every time you see the Rozzers you'll be looking the other way whistling and pretending to look all 'casual', your bound to get tugged!

Ninehigh - 11/2/11 at 07:47 PM

To be fair I've done worse things while driving

if you can afford a new rangerover you probably wont give a crap about the price of fuel

zilspeed - 11/2/11 at 08:48 PM

I once got dipped for red diesel.

Driving, a police bike told me to follow him to an area where Vosa were dpping tanks.

I was driving an unmarked white transit.
After they had dipped the tank, I told them that I worked for the council and it was an unmarked hire van so I would be pretty surprised if there was any red in the tank, which was the truth.

They gave me the 'not impressed, why didn't you say earlier' look.

Well you never asked.

very good.

steve m - 11/2/11 at 09:02 PM

I might use red diesel, and if stopped , say its a reflection, of my colorado red diesel mondeo

hahahaha

Ninehigh - 11/2/11 at 09:17 PM

I once saw it advertised in a station at about 25p/l.. I thought if I got caught with it I'd just say "Twenty-five pence per f**king litre officer, I'm not stupid!"

Simon - 11/2/11 at 09:30 PM

I got stopped in my Range Rover and they dipped the tank.

Funny thing was it was petrol with dodgy exhaust, they just had to carry on once they started

Years ago whe there were no emissions regs they were the same I think, then they needed to get things running on white to pass emissions tests etc & the white was more refined, additives etc in but the red was left as was. Recently the regs for red diesel has tightened up regarding emmisions & it's now said to be pretty much the same as the white again. Deliveries of this new stuff started around October last year

There's a bit of concern with this new red diesel, it's got a small percentage of bio-diesel in it & if you've got water in your tank & dont get through much of it (meaning it'll be in the tank a while) it may form a bacteria growth/sludge which will play havoc with filters etc & the other bits of crap that rests on the bottom of the tank will float more in it & so more filter trouble there.
But so far I've not seen any real problems & if it's just the same as the white well it's been around a year or two with the bio-diesel & it's not been any real problem that I've seen.

Now should you use it in your car? Well I have to pay tax so why should'nt you? Then again if I was sure enough I'd not be caught....
But I can't use it: I'm an Agric Engineer, I live on a farm & I drive a van, how the hell I've managed 16 years & never been dipped is a mystery!

The grade of fuel oil has alway been the same (35seconds fwiw)no matter what colour it is. Now, it's all low sulphur but still from the same tap at the refinery.

iank - 11/2/11 at 10:16 PM

HM Revenue & Customs stake out the local garage that sells it, nice public car park over the road to park their van with the camera.
They've even caught people with the pump stuck in their car rather than taking it away in a can.

Lad I know with a fairly new Range Rover has been dipped a few times. He owns a small plant hire company and they just seem to know which people/cars have access to it/visit sites that have it.

Vosa did the same in Derby, parked outside the garage they still caught 5 taxi drivers in a day.

martin1973 - 12/2/11 at 08:55 AM

i ran my old range rover on red for years.
when i got caught they fined me £500.
and the exsize duty since i brought the vehicle £2000

but red smell different, makes more smoke the men from HMRC know when its running on red.

JoelP - 12/2/11 at 09:32 PM

ive seen checkpoints twice on the road, but avoided them both - dont have time to waste chattering to people when i havent done anything.

Im sure if you did enough mileage, you could get a hire van and run it on red, and if caught, say that it must've been filled by the last user. They couldnt prove it anyway.

The IRA used to make a fortune by cleaning red diesel, and essentially charging the duty themselves to corrupt local garages. Im sure a competant chemist could clean it easily enough (and i mean the hidden markers, not the colour).
