Another recomend me a car thread
Davegtst - 5/3/11 at 10:17 PM

I need a new car. My current one is an Alfa 147 2.0 petrol. I've been looking at Lexus is 200 and Mitsubishi galants but could really do with an estate or one with quite alot of boot space so i can fit a few cases in and the dog family. I don't want something ordinary like a vectra or mondeo and can spend up to £4000. Any ideas?

Ninehigh - 5/3/11 at 10:20 PM

I'm sure you could get a Galant estate, or one I've been looking at recently the Nissan Stagea (I've been told to think Skyline estate)

Is size really a factor? I mean is it a case of fit the dog/some bags/etc or the whole lot at once?

Davegtst - 5/3/11 at 10:25 PM

Yes you can get an estate which is what i'm looking at. I also know about the stagea as i used to own an R33 skyline but they are all a bit old, i'm after something no older that 02 reg. Size is really quite a big factor, we go to Devon quite a bit to visit my parents and have 3 small dogs so need somewhere to fit a cage for them all.

Davegtst - 5/3/11 at 10:30 PM

Yeah, but you look a LOT older!!!

I had an IS200 for a daily driver for 2 years. Was a good lil car, I did about 30k in it, never skipped a beat, a new battery and a couple of services was all it needed. Drank fuel though. Expect 25-30mpg which isnt much for a 150bhp engine. Was very drift happy though
Looked smart too, I just added a Sport grill to brighten up the front end.

Davegtst - 5/3/11 at 10:39 PM

Is200 is definatly my favorite. Is there much boot space in the saloon as i probably wouldn't get an estate version. The 147 is crap on fuel too it does around 30 to the gallon on a motorway run. Petrol isn't an issue for me though.

Just make sure you choose one with the optional indicators!

norfolkluego - 5/3/11 at 10:46 PM

My daughter had an IS 200 saloon, lovely car but not big

Ninehigh - 5/3/11 at 10:49 PM

If you're after loads of space.. Kia Sedona?

Further to that autotrader is throwing up a few other options, Citroen C5? I know the hatch is massive in the back..

IS200 had good boot space, but being a saloon, its practicality is limited. A ski hatch is handy, but i did miss a folding/split seat that hatchbacks have. The IS200 estate (called something fancy like sporthatch, or wagon?) looks to have a decent boot though:

just rarer and slightly less attractive. Still better than ur average estate car.

Davegtst - 5/3/11 at 10:52 PM

No thanks about the Kia, not after a people carrier only a wife and dogs carrier.

Yhe Lexus IS200 are great cars. Thier only down side is... smallest boot you'll find for that size of car (saloon and estate).

PeterV - 5/3/11 at 11:13 PM

SAAB 95 Estate. Add a bit of tunning from Abbott Racing, Elk, Hirsch or DIY and have a car the carries it all and punches 350-500 BHP. They will run to 150-200K miles as well, even tweaked. Very low penny count per BHP

OK OK I'm bias I admit it

I have a shed load of SAAB's and live 500 meters from Abbott's.... but the above is all true honest!

loggyboy - 5/3/11 at 11:30 PM

Arent the Saabs just a redressed Vectra?

OK the IS is a redressed Toyota, but at least thats a half decent car in the first place!

''Can't bring myself to get a Volvo, i'm only 31.'' So? I've got a Rover 800 and I'm under 70. If you won't come to your senses and get a Mondeo estate a Volvo's a great second choice. I was only 35 when I had a Volvo mind you I did inherit it.

I have one you may like !!!

Go on.

Ninehigh - 6/3/11 at 01:47 AM

I like the way you say "I want a car that fits the wife, dog and suitcase" then "I'd quite like a Lexus with a boot the size of a tinder box"

You can get doggie seatbelts though

Volvos costing under 4k wont really suit a 31 yr old to be fair. The more modern ones look cooler (but im biased), i replaced the Lexus with this:

The V50 looks similar and are just creeping in at under £4k.

You ever driven one? £4K will get you a nice V70 complete with turbo. I bought my first Volvo when I was 30, it was like I'd never had a "proper" car before, only had Volvos since.

Bare - 6/3/11 at 03:59 AM

4000!? Likely a Bedford van?

T66 - 6/3/11 at 08:25 AM

Saab.....

Davegtst - 6/3/11 at 02:49 PM

Not really keen on Saabs. I don't know why but i don't like the dashboards.

Benzine - 6/3/11 at 08:33 PM

Volvos don't suit youngsters at all. I'm 27 and have 3. None, I meant none. I'd play it safe with the lexus.

van cleef - 6/3/11 at 09:55 PM

Phase 1 Skoda Octavia VRS estate vag reliability and has to be the thinking man's car.
