i am thinking about getting a new car,must be full of shiny toys and cheapish to run,newish shape mondeo seems to fit the bill but i would prefer an oil burner and have heard so many horror stories about the tdci lumps.
anyone care to recommend something similar?,i have about £1500 to spend/fritter

i had also heard a ew nasty stories regarding the tdci lumps, but after a post on here, most suggested they are fantastic and as good as any oil burners out there!

My 2005 2.2 tdci has done 150k trouble free miles.
2 springs, 2 wheel bearings. 4 sets discs 3 sidelight bulbs 4 sets tyres and a EGR bypass
original exhaust, battery
just change oil and filters

does seem to be luck of the draw reliability wise on the tdci
cracking car to drive though

Thing about the Ford tdci is when they do go wrong they are expensive to fix, the flywheel problem seems a lot less of an issue than it was a few years back.

You will find a good Rover 75 Diesel for that money the version of the BMW diesel in the 75 is more reliable than that BMW fit to their own models or the Mk1 Freelander as it dosen't have swirl flaps or balancing shafts.

Other than that its Pegeot/Citreon or VW

if you look a Toyota diesels listen for piston slap ---- caused by an oil type & service interval issue --- ir not using fully synthetic.

You could get a 406 easily for the price, very comfy and well equipped.

Either an HDI for 50+mpg or a DT that does 40mpg and run it on veg oil/hydraulic oil/old engine oil or anything else with oil in the name. Mine has now passed 260k and is still running fine.

Other than that Audi 80 1.9 TDis are the bleeping nuts.

My daughter has an A4 and it fails to live up to hype. Uses oil, handling twitchy, ride jerky and clunky gearchange. Engine is a beut though it performs better than my 2.2.
Also for a 3 year old car it feels jaded.

Bro in law has a 2.0 TDCi on loan while his car is being repaired as it was rear ended. Admitted it is an 09 and should be good but it is superb to drive and goes like S O A S.

John i've some more Swedish luxary if you want?
