Tin Top advice
roadrunner - 10/5/11 at 06:21 PM

It looks like I have an engine mount issue with my 1.8t Passat. I get a vibration from the engine that resinates through the gear stick causing it to rattle.
Now I have tried to shake the gearbox to see if those mounts where shot, but there was no movement at all.
Next I shook the engine and the movement was massive, I could hear the fluids sloshing about inside.
Can anyone tell me the best way for checking each mount, or is it a case to replace all the mounts. It's just I am trying to save money at the moment.
Thanks
Brad.

No, the engine fits longitudinally, so has two mounts at each side, one at the nose and two at the back for the gear box.

It wouldn't do any harm to replace them one by one, but be prepared to have to replace them all

Stick a jack under the sump (protect sump with lump of wood) and slowly jack it up, watching for undue movement in any of the mounts.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get good quality but not expensive engine mounts, and I would preferably want to avoid VW dealers.
Thanks
Brad,
