fun tin top choice
swanny - 18/5/11 at 08:13 PM

hello all,

we now have a sensible car for the family (cmax) and the vindicator for when i fancy some wind in my thinning hair, and flies in my fat face.

but i've been thinking for ages about getting something more engaging as a second car. current second car is a diesel corsa.

the current list is

Civic type r EP3
Impreza wrx
honda s2000
astra gsi/vxr
Seat curpra R

budget is around 7 k, mpg isnt really an issue as the corsa is currently doing about 40 miles a week.

have read various owners and been a bit scared as there seems to be a long list of possible problems. so thought i'd post on here for an unbiased view.

i have two questions really. does anyone have experience of one or more of the list, and which would prefer. also hve i missed any suitable candidates?

cheers

Paul

ive had 2 x imprezas. but one a prodrive and one an sti,so never had a wrx. but both were completely faultless in every way apart from mpg and insurance. very good cars for the money i think

+1

except I've had 5 wrx all to 90,000+miles and never a fault. Just get a standard car,....

I have had a Renaultsport megane from new which has been faultless over the five year's i have owned it and alway's put's a smile on my face.

I would say are all your choice's apart from the Astra would go round corner's.

Is the S2000 not the odd one out?

I would consider an Elise if the S2000 is on it. What would you use it for?

I have owned a Leon Cupra and they are nice cars. I have seen a couple of faults with them though (not mine but possibly just lucky).

My old boss had a Civic type R and before that an Astra GSi, Then he had a Focus ST which he said was much better (And that from the signs on the VW garage he could by and run a VW Fox for what he was paying in fuel). Due to some tax based weirdness he now drives a Smart car.

The Astra had some kind of engine problem in a carpark that temperarilly killed it, it was only 2 at the time and I'm told it needed a fair amount of work to fix. I Add that it was a company car and fully maintained.

i did see a piece on renault sport meganes in ppc, they seemed very impressed too.
the s200 was just on the list because i realised at the last minute how cheap they were now.

mainly it would be for me driving to work and the odd fun drive. might be handy in retrospect to have a four seater in case anything happens with family car and we just have two 2 seaters as a substitute.

need to try and drive these four then i reckon

civic
seat
renault
impreza
cheers

Rx8?

Why no focus ST? They seem to be raved about in most 'shoot outs' alongside its rivals. More characterful engine etc.....

Older E39 M5? Or what sort of M3 could you pick up in that price bracket?
