Much more interesting things to do......

I'll start watching again once they bring back slicks and TURBO'S!!!

keith777 - 12/6/11 at 09:09 PM

From what started a damp squib turned out to be the best race of the season !!

liam.mccaffrey - 12/6/11 at 09:10 PM

got slicks mate, best race ive seen

JoelP - 12/6/11 at 09:11 PM

Fantastic, im just secretly gutted that MSC didnt get onto the podium

scootz - 12/6/11 at 09:13 PM

T'was great! I can't believe how good this season has been so far!

(and yes... I was also a little disappointed that Schumi didn't get a podium )

Yeah, and screaming V8s too !!!

Oh hang on, they've got those.
along with the slicks.

May be manufactured to make it more interesting, but it's great stuff.

femster87 - 12/6/11 at 09:15 PM

Soo glad I stuck with it too. Great race

T66 - 12/6/11 at 09:17 PM

Mr G - 12/6/11 at 09:22 PM

I'll start watching again when they bring back 6 wheels and downforce fans

Props to Schumi !!

Kwik - 12/6/11 at 09:23 PM

loved it all, the button charge through webber schumacher and vettel

the photo finish between kobiashi and massa (though i feel sorry for kamui)

and the marshall running onto the track, and slipping, several times....

i think buttons gunna be like a steam train next race now...

phelpsa - 12/6/11 at 09:27 PM

Brilliant!

ReMan - 12/6/11 at 09:28 PM

I reckon best I've seen for 2 years (I dont watch every one)

I was wondering what would happen if the safety car spun off, or if one ever has

Quite like the guy now, he went up a lot in my estimation when he came back knowing it wouldnt be as easy as when he left. Many would have left on a high and kept their reputation intact.

Mr G - 12/6/11 at 09:45 PM

Jacamo marshall number 1

Jacamo marshall number 2

If your that out of shape you shouldn't be marshalling at that level if you ask me

[Edited on 12/6/11 by Mr G]

Steve Hignett - 12/6/11 at 09:50 PM

For the marshall to fall in the first place was a disgrace for him to fall/slip again was absolutely annoying!

Now I don't usually watch F1, so pls forgive my next statement, but:- how was it that Webber had his wing open toward the finish line? I don't know the rules at all, but I wouldnt have thouyht that was allowed as he was already the car in front!

Amazing race by JB, well deserved victory!

Hoping nothing comes of any enquiry...

I usually hope the underdog does well too, (re MSC) but I'm not sure I want him to do well after past "crimes"...

Surrey Dave - 12/6/11 at 10:01 PM

Great ! had me jumping out of my chair shoutin for JB!

I think JB has proven to be far better than many myself included thought, great sportsman personality too..............

MikeR - 12/6/11 at 10:06 PM

loved it! In trouble as i was supposed to do some work but didn't want to leave telly. Very impressed by jb. Curious what effect it will have on lewis. Despite not liking msc for a very long time i wanted him to get on the podium with jb and webber. So close to the perfect end.

dave107 - 12/6/11 at 10:11 PM

Same MSC didn't get on the podium brilliant race though oh and were did the safety car finish,

the DRS is only usually in one part of the track, but for this race they had it on 2 parts with only 1 activation zone.

so webber was within 1 second at that start of the long straight and passed schumacher on the straight, he then hit the breaks for the chicane which closes his rear wing, there is then a second line that he can activate his rear wing from.

very unusual to have 2 lines you can use it from...

I still think it's a nonsence to give the bloke behind the advantage of DRS.

Once again, it's probably my lack of F1 understanding and missing something - but I thought he passed him on the lap previous, and therefore was the lead car, so not able to use the DRS???

blakep82 - 12/6/11 at 11:56 PM

I can't stand JB, i hope the outcome of the investigation will be favourable to me...

skodaman - 13/6/11 at 01:17 AM

'Fantastic, im just secretly gutted that MSC didnt get onto the podium' Yeh I was thinking the same, though I would never admit it in public. I couldn't stand Scummy when he was winning everything with Ferrari. He went up in my estimation when he went bike racing. Obviously not for the money. Good luck to the Flying Chin (unless he starts winning everything again that is).

You have to be 1 second or less to ANY car that is in front of you for it to become active

Why? The fact he has closed to within one second and is staying there in the dirty air indicates he is faster than the car in front. Overtaking was becoming impossible between closely matched cars when the 'follower' had to sit in turbulent air.

yep, and then the next lap round, if they're still within 1 sec of each other, the tables are turned. its genius

Irony - 13/6/11 at 11:09 AM

I agree that the DRS is a good thing as without it there seems to be little chance of overtakes between similar cars. But sometimes to me it does seem that on some tracks it can make overtakes seem to easy. In Canada I kinda wanted (even though I dislike O'l Bighead) Schuey to get a podium place but he was a sitting duck with the DRS.

907 - 13/6/11 at 11:28 AM

Turned out a fantastic race. I was on the edge of my seat.

I too would like to have seen MS on the podium.

I thought the "boys in the box" handled the red flag period well.
I was really impressed with DC's knowledge of the local wildlife.

designer - 13/6/11 at 01:05 PM

I see we are all raving about F1 after a wet race.

Without a safety car Vettel would have walked it. Button gained nearly a full minute because of the safety car and would have been nowhere.

That's NOT racing.

You should probably watch more then.... or even have watched the Canadian race properly because that situation has not been happening, nobody who passed using DRS was repassed the next lap by the car that they just passed. MSC and Webber was a case in point.

persoanlly I don't agree with DRS but it has been working and odoing what they said it would do.

blakep82 - 13/6/11 at 01:46 PM

i never said it happens in every case, i just said that if they're still within a second, they get the chance to use it too, and i did watch the canadian GP, all of it, even the 2 hours of rain lol

as i see it, the problem with DRS and the canadian gp was the rain/wet track. DRS wasn't much good in this case because of the extra braking required. and having to go onto the wetter part of the track to over take. it only worked if someone was a lot slower, in which case, they weren't going to over take again, with or without DRS or rain.

Sorry I have to respectfully disagree. Admittedly I was bored of the safety cars many outings but its there for a reason. Without it Vettel might have spun off and never 'walked' again.

Besides didn't Vettel immediately pit twice when the safety car came out. At 22-23 seconds per pit stop thats nearly 50 seconds he saved.

blakep82 - 13/6/11 at 03:24 PM

safety car at the end (not because of rain) bunched everyone up, gave button the advantage, end of

Some people are just never bloody happy.

This year every race has been superb yet people are still moaning like fuck.

That depends on your definition of the word advantage. The Safety car helped button gain 4 maybe 5 seconds thats all. Button still had to close the 5 - 6 seconds gap to Vettel who was slightly caught napping by Buttons pace after the safety car came in. After he had caught him he still had to pass or pressurise Vettel into a mistake. Which he did. Safety cars or no safety cars Button drove a fantastic race and deserved the win.

to be honest, i'm never going to agree with that part i can't stand the guy, i would have loved ANYONE but him to win i'd try and argue the point wherever him winning is concerned...

if i remember right, before that last safety car (10 laps before the end), he was about 14 seconds down (i checked on iplayer), safety car comes out, goes in, he's 3 seconds down, from that 3 seconds for the last 10 laps, he only just got by because of vettels error (not button's 'excellent' driving) which i don't put down to pressure. button wasn't close enough imo to be pressuring, although last lap, maybe a bit.

had he have had to catch up the original 14 seconds over that 10 laps as it would have been without safety car, he would not have done it. he's an average driver.

he was a main player in 2 accidents (1 imo he was a cause of, the other, hmm, perhaps not) and the win was down to team strategy rather than driving, ie bringing him in for inters at that stage before everyone else.
again, the drive was average, the team and the safety car won it for him.
the red wing blackbird drove a better race can we have them over here?

[Edited on 13/6/11 by blakep82]

scootz - 13/6/11 at 05:30 PM

I get the feeling you don't like Button much Blake! I used to dislike him too, but then he matured and he's my main-man now (at least until Di Resta gets himself into a top team!). Who knows - maybe when Lewis finally grows up, then I'll start to root for him too.

Anyway back to the matter at hand...

quote:
Originally posted by blakep82... Button wasn't close enough IMO to be pressuring, although last lap, maybe a bit.

That doesn't make sense. You're saying that Button wasn't pressurising Vettel, yet the fact remains that he was eating up the time / distance between them! Then you concede that he 'maybe' pressured him 'a bit' on the last lap. It was the last lap where Button was crawling over Vettels diffuser and it was the last lap that Vettel dropped it! Sounds like JB was pressurising SV a lot on the last lap to me!

quote:
Originally posted by blakep82... and the win was down to team strategy rather than driving, ie bringing him in for inters at that stage before everyone else.

There was no strategy! JB was in the pits 6 times (not including the drive-through penalty!). SV was in a couple of times only and these were under the Safety-Car so they were virtually 'free' stops. As for the early stop for inters you mention - that move didn't work out for him. The rain started lashing down again a few laps into them and he was sliding about again!

blakep82 - 13/6/11 at 05:46 PM

he's still a knob
and the last safety car gave him an instant 10 second catch up, he wouldn't have done it without that

scootz - 13/6/11 at 05:49 PM

Quite!

TheGiantTribble - 13/6/11 at 06:18 PM

Regardless of whom couldn't overtake the bird with the red shoulders dispite having DRS and a chin the size of a small Scottish town

The Fact Remains...

It's still a hell of a lot more exciting than when the Cheating Sausage Muncher was driving for the Red Pasta Team, with a document from FIA allowing them to re write the rule book to suit themselves.

Yes DRS feels a bit fake to me, but at least we've had races that we can all agree to disagree on, whom drove best/was robbed the most/did or didn't give a boring interview even two days after the race
And yes I too for a brief moment felt sorry for Michael Shu but then I remembered how he should have been banned from motorsport for his many, many, many bits of rule bending.

Irony - 13/6/11 at 09:49 PM

Can't believe I felt even a little bit bad micheal Schu didn't get a podium. Must keep remembering the days he was a smug Dick Dastardly.

zilspeed - 13/6/11 at 09:50 PM

DRS is a work of genius, precisely because of the way it works.

If you can't get close to the guy you're meant to be racing, you don't get DRS.
If you're good enough to get that close, bingo, you get DRS.
Game on.

That along with tyres that can't last a race, along with the lottery of soft and hard tyres has made this season so far, very enjoyable.

Remember, we used to have whole seasons where there was hardly any overtaking...

Now, you're tuning in expecting a good race.
It's only a couple of years ago that the change of being bored to death was very real.

Kwik - 13/6/11 at 10:55 PM

DRS was introduced because people complained of the lack of overtaking. now you may think its too artificial and at first i thought the same.

but to get more overtaking you need less down force on the cars. the down foce the cars create upsets the aerodynamics of the chasing car when they are about 1 second behind, so last year a very fast jenson button could be going 3 seconds a lap faster than vetel, get up behind him and not keep his great speed because of the inefficiency of his aerodynamics caused by the guy in front.

now we all love to watch F1 cars go around corners at 150mph that we wouldn't take at 50mph in road cars, that is what F1 is all about, but we also want more overtaking. so DRS just eliminates the speed lost when you get up close to the guy in front (because your driving well and your car is faster) in a safe predictable manor.
