New Toy Woes... RV8 Help Required (Please!).
scootz - 4/7/11 at 05:43 PM

Well damn, blast and tarnation (whatever that actually means).

A mate had been looking at a Formula 27 with an RV8 engine that was coming in at bargain-money as its one and only owner was emigrating in a matter of days and no-one was buying it at the advertised £7k.

He dropped his interest when he realised it was an auto... and then I stepped in and threw a silly offer at it... which the owner accepted! Doh! When will I learn! I don't need any other projects... they're coming out of my ears!

Anyway... its a 1998 kit and was IVA'd in 2003. It has an RV8 with Edelbrock (Weber) 4-barrel carb and a BW65 (or 66... whatever was in the Rover SD1) auto box. It's only done 180 miles since then... and most of them were going back and forth for MOT!

My masterplan was to play with it during the summer and then sell it when the colder weather sets in. Only one small problem though - it's got a couple of niggly issues and it ain't going anywhere

Pah!

Nothing major. I need to set the carb-up (and make sure all the carb piepwork is going to the right places.... the thing is like a flippin octopus), diagnose an electrical fault and tidy up a few bits and bobs. I wanted to be out playing!

There's a snap of the car below, but can anyone help me with a name for the hose in this picture? It looks like it's a straight piece of pipe which has been squashed to suit, so is probably not doing it's job very well (whatever that job may be). If I get a name, then I can search for a factory-replacement part that is shaped for the purpose. Well that's the plan anyway...

PS - The stickers were the first thing to go!

That isn't factory at all, the pipe should fit between the union at the back of the pump, into the steel pipe which runs under the manifold, just visible towards the yop of your circle, at the back of the manifold there should be another union, this and the steel pipe running under the manifold feed the heater.

I can't remember what the other union on the pump is for.....

To help out with the generalities of the carb, see here and
here.

Ref the hose - it seems that the two pipes shouldn't be joined together but you may not have a bypass on the thermostat housing. here's what mine looks like

Ah!

Just looked through the notes again and it has a Rover P6 short-nose water pump.

I'm guessing there will be no 'off the shelf' solution then!

Basically you can take the hose in question off and cap the hose tails.
The hose tails are for inlet manifold heating and for the heater it doesnt look like you have either.
There may be a plate at the rear of the manifold or a hose tail if there is you can run a hose front the back of the pump to the front spigot on the thermostat housing (this would need to be drilled through (check the manifold to see if it has a hole behind the spigot)) then you would run a hose from the rear hose tail tothe hose tail on the pump top.
hope this makes sense Ray

Thanks!

A better pic of the engine layout.

Another Q!

The PCV Valve Port is connected to both rocker breathers. Some suggest that you should only connect to one rocker and fit a small direct-to-air filter on the other. Any recommendations on which way to go?

The Full-Time Vacuum Port is connected to the auto gearbox... I think it's the breather. Which begs the question... why would you want to collect gearbox oil and recycle it down the engine cylinders? Why not just fit a direct-to-air filter on the gearbox breather?

The Ported-Vacuum Port is connected to the dizzy diaphragm. That seems to be the only thing that most folk agree on!

Cheers guys!

one hose hoes to the inlet manifold, the other goes to the heater - this is a steel tube that is attached under the manifold (I refer to original manifold for SU carb).

This hoses are offset so you can't use a straight length as it will kink.

There is P6 specialist, name escapes me right now who are the only peeps that sell these hoses. ... be back in a mo'.....

oh, and I give you 6 weeks before you are selling it?!?!

not sure what you are asking about the breather but V8 are designed to breathe - there should be a metal tube in the engine back plate that is normally connected to the origianl air filter to draw filtered air in - if you are using something else, then use a small type &N filter.

the two outlets on the rocker covers should have flame traps connected and then run to the carbs (again, I am takling twin SU that you don't have) so the air/fumes in the engine can circulate.

I forget what happens if you alter that arrangement, it is gettling late and I cannae be bothered to think nor look it up.

... and what's the deal with the long T-handled rocker cover bolts?

excess weight and I'll bet you be forever snagging your sleeves on them.

That looks like its going to be alot of fun once you get it sorted Scootz

Thanks guys!

Dont know about a gearbox breather... but it could be a vacuum line to the gearbox for kickdown or similar device etc etc.
Just not sure, as I am not an autobox man.

Its just a thought.

EDIT:

I thought the rocker breathers went like this:
One side, stubby filter to the open air (Inlet)
The other side rocker is the outlet, and goes via a PCV (Valve) into the vacuum hole in the carb.
ie the carb draws air from the filter on one rocker cover, through the engine, throught the PCV, then into the carb. Its a sort of circuit.
I have seen this on sevral RV8's in ki8t cars, and on Landy's.

one like this:

Rover V8 Ford V8 Chevy V8 kitcar PCV valve | eBay UK

It fits in the 2" Tall tube on a later type rocker cover. (Oil filler cap sized hole)

See the pic below... its on the front driver side rocker cover.. Std oil filler is on the other side rocker in this picture. A better picture is the large balck object in the labelled picture in the thread a couple above this one.

Just thought of something else...
I am sure that heater hose is wrong.. If you cap it off there is no thermostat bypass route.
Check how the pipes should route before capping them off.

Cheers!

Hadn't thought of the kick-down possibility! I'm off to find a schematic of a BW65/66.

Aaargh... annoyed.com of not being able to drive it! Might very well just move it on 'as-is' and look for something that goes whilst the sun is still shining!
