Speed Camera Vans
aka_shortie - 27/7/11 at 12:31 AM

Was driving along today and saw one of these camera vans on the other side of the road facing me. Dont worry, i wasnt speeding. I had never seen one before with the CCTV type camera on the side / front.

As far as i am aware, the main laser goes out the back window which this also had, and that is what calculates your speed.

So do these new dome cameras catch motorists also approaching from the front of the van or is it for say motorcyclist that have gone past the van as they have no front number plate?

any thoughts?

Just to catch both of your number plates i think - say you have an obscured number plate because you're carrying a push bike on a rack or similar. They also catch the rear number plate on motorbikes that have been speed zapped from the front.

I'm pretty sure they can have a calibrated camera pointing forwards, backwards or out the side door (handy for motorway bridges) so there isn't a safe approach ...

"bridges) so there isn't a safe approach ..."

There is, make sure your below the speed limit .................

These cameras are more likely for "security of the van" purposes. It must be tempting to let the tyres down if you've been done by one of these.

Front Looks NPR to me ( number plate recognision ) the one on the side look security type ( lower resolution ).

and I would think its to get the 'Other Plate' for bikes ect ect

Yup definately for getting the rear number plate. By coincidence I happened to be chatting to a traffic cop at the weekend about this very subject.

Motorbikes dont have front number plates so they have camera's to take rear plate.

I believe there is some new vans that have cameras front / back /and both sides operating in East Yorkshire/ Humber side
The cameras work up to 1000mts

I'd be surprised to find any policeman in the back of these van, just tax collectors. joking apart, they are actually operated by civilian not police. The footage of anyone caught is reviewed by an officer to ensure that you were speeding .... aledgedly

belive so notice the blue and yellow hatching on the van but no 'Police' on the Van I belive they are civi's so no powers to stop or detain would be an intresting exercise not that I have a 7.5 tone truck

from the camera van's i've seen, those operating have the rear window's down, even glass reflects a very small percentage of the light travelling through it, so i think the lasers they use to measure speed need the window down to work accurately. i've gone past a van faster than i should of, windows were up, and no ticket, so i doubt there's any speed measurement going on from the front facing camera.

If they're not manned we'll have to "board up" the windows with some posters
