Help identifying this pipe
jabs - 13/10/12 at 06:19 PM

As per the title I need help. I have just installed a "new" engine/gearbox into my sons 02 plate 1.6 ford focus. The engine is installed from under the car. It went in ok with the usual giggle here and there to get around bits. Anyway after it was into postion I looked under the car and lying on the drive was this pipe. It was at the front of the car roughly under the radiator and was in line with the front of the car, ie side to side. Now the pipe doesn't have any oil or water in it, it has a flare at each end and looks as as if it was pushed into a pipe up to the flare at each end. The engine runs ok and does not leak anything. Now I have looked and looked but just cannot see where the pipe comes from or what it could be used for.

Can the power of the collective provide an answer

Looks like the pressure balance pipe fom the steering rack. There should be a hole in the inner
lip of eack rack boot, fits in there.

Agreed ^^^

Goes between the two steering rack boots. As one compresses, the air in it transfers to the other thats extenting. Prevents the boots collapsing when fully extended at full lock. It just pushes into the inner end of the boots so easy to dislodge.
