Jaguar XJR V8 Diff
richard thomas - 31/10/12 at 06:38 PM

Just bought a 1998 4.0 V8 XJR, anyone on here know if the 4.0 V8 XJ8 has the same diff unit? Need to replace mine....major noise on the overrun...

Rumour has it that there the X308 XJR has an LSD, but i think it is simply that - a rumour.....I know the ratio's on XJR/XJ8 are both 3.08....but looking on ebay, it's about £120 for an XJ8 diff and £350 for an XJR diff - exploitation of the XJR name methinks? Not spending £350 for a £120 item

Been looking in Jaguar forums, but all a bit vague...and I know I can find out anything about anything on here so....

Any views?

Cheers,

Rich.

Edited to say: I think I have discovered that they are the same.....

A bit of a google also suggests that it might be a viscous LSD - mind you that was an american web site.

Why not pop it off and have a peek inside?

The diff seems to be a bit of a weak spot on these cars judging by the number of mentions it gets on google too!

I looked into this for my s type and it looks like there is a LSD that fits the American Lincoln version that will bolt into the jag diff . As far as I can find there is no option on uk cars including the type r v8

Hi

I am pretty sure (would have to double check at work tomorrow) that thay are the same

They didn't have LSDs in the V8s they've got traction control instead so no need

As said would need to double check before you rush and bid on one!

I had the 6 cylinder xjr 1996 version and I don't think it has a lsd as it would spin a single wheel very easily until the electronic traction control cut in

David

Sorry your talking about the V8 version

An XJR in XJ40 format had a viscous LSD, the same one as fitted to face lift XJS's.

Earlier XJS's had power lock diffs.

When traction control came out the need for a LSD was removed.

Think that's where mine is at - no LSD, trction control instead (its an X308 model, first of the V8's)

Silly question as I'm sure you've thought of this but could you ask Jaguar?

I know with Colbornes VW I'd tell them the plate and they can tell me everything about my Mk2 Golf!

As Jag' as helpful?

Cheers,
James

Just looked this up on Jaguar parts and I can confirm the 4.0 V8 and XJR diffs are exactly the same part number.

Hope this helps

Nice one, cheers!

Just found an entire back axle assembly on the bay for £200 from an XJR - snapped it up as I am sure the other parts might come in handy....cheaper than most diffs alone!
