Are the RAC any good?
smart51 - 3/1/13 at 10:21 AM

Green Flag don't like my 19 year old Suzuki Cappuccino because of its age so they want to charge me a fortune to cover it, and wont cover it on a Personal or Family policy. The RAC will and so are a fraction cheaper. I've never used the RAC. Are they any good?

Never had any problems, been with them 9 years and used them 5 times (including picking up a mates unregistered Tiger from Nottingham SVA, after it ripped sump plug off driving onto brake test rollers) You will need to phone them on renewal, mine was £230 went down to £135 after I phoned.
We also got £10 per annum discount off car insurance this year (£90), which was nice.

I've always found them very good, always arrive quick and always try their best to get you going, they even brought us from Manchester to Glasgow complete with kids, dog and a rabbit in tow (long story) when the fuel pump on my old mondeo decided to disintegrate.

That sounds about right. On two occasions when the garage was closed they took the car home, and came back the next day to take it there.

I'm hopefully going to give them a go this year. I've been with rescuemycar.com for about five years, and up until recently they've been great. But having to sit on the side of a motorway for more than three hours because they (and I'm quoting here) 'couldn't find a company who would rescue me', I think it's time to move on.

It's the tesco clubcard points that make it most appealing, you can get the lower cover options virtually free and even the higher ones get cut down to a decent level.

I'm just hoping that they look after motorbikes, it was the main reason I switched from AA to rescuemycar so many years back. I was paying AA premiums, but not getting AA service as they don't seem to have bike knowledge in my area and just send third parties.

Just as a side question, has anyone had any trouble with kit cars and breakdown cover? I don't think I've ever seen them mentioned in the T&C's, but then again I've never really looked?

I have been with RAC many years - each year I use Tesco points to pay.

Whenever I have called them out they have been perfect.

32 years with RAC, not had to use them that often but always good service when I have. What I like the most is that they cover me not a specific car.

Sounds good. GF were always good with the kit car but I don't want to pay the extra premium for the cappuccino. RAC it is then.

Brittania for me. Been with them for many years and for £72 (IIRC) I get cover for any car I'm travelling in as a driver or passenger and the same cover for SWMBO as well as vehicle cover for one car which includes anyone driving it.
I've used hem plent of times without any complaints.

I use First Choice, as promoted by my insurer and have found them very good, quick response to my 12 year old Terrano and recovery back home twice in a fortnight for I think £38

my dad's been with RAC for more than 30 years and never had any issues

I've been with them ~11 years but only had to call the out once for an imobiliser fault, it wasn't looking good but the boy kept trying for over an hour till we got it running
it ran for 6 months after that (cement dust inside ECU's is not good )

Me & Wifey bank with barclays.
We have somthing called 'additions'.
This covers all sorts - including breakdown - can't remember how much - but cheap..

Wifey uses a scooter and often gets dragged back by RAC - just gives them the joint account number

I ran out of petrol M1 south once - very quick - nice guy

I have apolicy with Auto Aid. Acts as a breakdown insurance policy. You have to pay the breakdown company and claim back on the policy. Cost me £38 last year covers any vehicle you are in and home start. Found it on the Martin Lewis site. Might be worth an enquiry.

I have been with the RAC for 10+ years. Used them 4 or 5 times and always been excellent. Personal cover so any car as well.
