Insurance renewal, no surprise there then........
Jon Ison - 7/2/13 at 04:25 PM

Can I name & shame or is it not the "Done Deal" ?

Had renewal through for van, £458.59

Shopped around on Internet got much better deal as you do but thought, I know lets get a quote and see if it is a "Done Deal"

Input exactly same details as on renewal, £352.86, so its not a "Done Deal" then.

I know there all the same, don't deserve customer loyalty, non of them.

Just about to call renewal line, see what they have to say, will report back.

Got a quote from Direct Line last month, for my house insurance. This showed an increase of about 20%, so I started to shop around.

Got a quote I liked elsewhere, so rang DL to say that I was cancelling their direct debit. Got put through to the 'closing account' department (or whatever they're called) and within 30 seconds he'd reduced the price to just about exactly the same as last year!

So why couldn't they have done that from the start?

I like and trust insurance brokers just about as much as I like/trust estate agents and car salesman...

Yep, pretty regular occurrence for me as well. My broker even told me on renewal to just go straight through to their 'closing account department' (not Direct Line but same idea), and they'd give me the insurance for whatever I could find on the internet. Despite their renewals being a good 20-40% higher!!

I almost switched insurer on principle... almost....

Beacuse they would probably go out of business if they gave everyone the best possible rates! Nothings ever been handed on a plate.

Had this when renewing the mx5 insurance, direct line wanted £650 fully comp, got better level of cover at A plan for £360!

To be fair when the renewal quote as the 1st line "We have searched our insurer panel to find you our best price for your renewal this year" it blatant lies, nothing more nothing less.

I read that line to them on the phone, I got no answer surprisingly.

I found the AA doing this too.. £88 for next year's breakdown cover, rung them a week after it expired and got it for £45 lke last year

Had this a few years ago with Norwich union
Renewal came through and it had gone up considerably, went on line and it was £120 cheaper, phoned them up and asked why it was so much cheaper on-line when i had been with them for quite a while ?
they said "your not really supposed to do that..." errr wtf

Anyway after a chat they said they'd do it for the online price "just this time..."

Following year the same thing happened but i couldn't be arsed to go through it all again so went elsewhere...

I had a similar problem recently with RIAS house insurance. The renewal premium had'nt gone up much but I always shop around at renewal time. I obtained quotes of 50% cheaper so went back to RIAS to cancel the renewal but they then matched the new quotes.
When I complained that they should have offered me this deal in the first place they said that as they are a broker they obliged to offer a standard renewal and are unable to drop the price until you ask.
So if you want continuity of supplier it's always worth to go back to them to see if they can drop the price.

When it comes to annual insurance renewals, be it house, car or whatever, i always shop around for the best deal. If my current insurers can't match or better it, I go elsewhere. Loyalty counts for nothing these days

This is absolutely normal. 5 times a year we do this, it's tedious!

pekwah1 - 7/2/13 at 10:41 PM

the simple reason for this is that a lot of people are just lazy.
to renew you don't need to do a single thing so your existing insurer bumps the price up a bit assuming you are one of the lazy ones.
When they realise you're not they'll give you the same deal as a new customer..;

ReMan - 7/2/13 at 11:19 PM

Dead right
You'll notice they never tell you on the renewal what you paid last year either
In fact, I'd be lazy if they only wanted to shaft me for ±£20.
Trouble is they like to pile on £50-100, they're greedy footers period.

Even more angry is the NCB scam.
You can only use it on one car to renew.
But if you have more than 1 insurance, you have to declare accidents and claims on any car, for which they pile on the £'s

I have used A-Plan, for my work van, for the last few years. This had always been 3rd party, fire 'n' theft. This years re-newall came in at £65.00 LESS than last year! No one could/would match this, online or elsewhere!

I changed the van a few weeks later for a much newer one, and they let me change policy to fully comp for less than £100.00.

I will definetly be trying to stay with them next year, by whatever means.
