hand held CB radios?
blakep82 - 17/5/13 at 07:20 PM

ok, so the car's still no where near finished
but i was thinking, I got an intercom thing a while back (had credit with a company, and they had nothing i really needed except body pins and an intercom) to talk to passengers, but i was thinking, its not hugely practical, wires tie the helmet into the car for example.

then i thought about a couple of hand held CB radios. with plug in headsets (speaker and mic that fit into a helmet and remote push to talk button) so that it could be used driver to passenger, but also car to car too, if travelling with someone in another car.

what should i be looking for? want fairly good quality ones though. half decent range.
I know american truckers love them, what about our lorry drivers? can you get any sort of traffic info listening to them?
brands to look for, bearing in mind the type of headset i'm after.

i know there's the cheap walkie talkie type things, but i'd rather get something a bit better, to get a decent range with it

I've got a couple of midland handhelds. They're really good. Midland 42s which were like rocking horse poo when I bought them. I don't use them now tho.

I had chatted to other kit cars before in the Stonleigh queue on CB, channel 7 being the obvious choice

Do they still do the licenses for CR Rodio ?
I'm remember getting a license decades ago though for some reason the licenses only cover 'furry muppets' (FM) whilst almost everyone used the illegal 'aunty mary' (AM) on the 27MHz band.

No. They did away with it a few years ago, because noone bought them!! (I used to).

You're ok on 27 meg, at half a watt of power iirc.

I've got a set, i used to pick up banksmen talking to crane drivers when I was near building sites, getting something that won't pick up others will not be cheap, that's motorcycle examiners quality stuff! Exclusive channels maybe!

i want to pick up other stuff though! the more the better really. makes it more interesting, and useful.

whats recommendations have you guys got for stuff to look out for (AM/FM? how many channels? etc) and where to look for a pair of hand helds? midland are the ones that always stand out, kenwood would be nice too. but prices seem actually quite high, well, compared to what i've got in the bank right now tbh.
just looking for some ideas. fancy getting one now, see what i can pick up, get an isea for how they work, and the other when the car's done
where's good to buy from? 2nd hand is good!

i got a pair of PMR handsets, you can get speakermic,s for them, less chance of kids on the airwaves and very small, the downside is limited range tho i have had 5 miles from my car to a house.

I've had a pair of the pmr type. Not very impressed, and its very hilly here, so range won't be up to much.
Also, hand held speakermic is no good, I need an earpiece and mic that fits in a full face helmet.
Passenger to passenger, car to car, and even car to home would be handy (dependant on range)
But car to car on a long trip is the main one really

are american CB's different to the ones we can use here?

http://www.amazon.com/Midland-75-822-Channel-CB-Way-Radio/dp/B00000K2YR/ref=pd_sim_sbs_misc_1

£37 (plus post and tax probably) is a lot better than any price here!
