I'm due to visit New York for a few days in October, I'm taking my kids, and as they are both into cars so was wondering if there are any decent car related places or car meets to visit?

ps. Any other tips on places to visit would be great!

for explorers & mad scientists, where guests can eat & drink
amongst the bizarre & unusual.

There's no good car stuff in NYC - there's a Ferrari dealer, merc dealer and audi dealer but I wouldn't waste my time when there is so much good stuff to see/do.

As for recommendations of other things to do - depends really what you're looking for. I've worked in NY for nearly 15 years now and have had a few stints living in the city, so know my way around relatively well. There's so much to see and do that its difficult to narrow it down, but if you only had a few days some of my advice would be:

Do use the subway - taxis are expensive and slower.
Walk as much as you can.
Don't do Empire State Building.
Do Top of the Rock instead.
Macy's/Bloomingdales are fine, but just department stores, not the best thing to see in NY - Macy's is better seen from the outside at Herald Square.
Grand Central Terminal (not Station!) is a must see.
Times Square - worth a look, but don't spend a lot of time here, the surrounding are isn't the best - very busy/expensive.
If you're into photography/video check out bhphotovideo.com - you can buy anything!
Do go on the grey line open top tour bus - always worth it, but Downtown loop only unless you are particularly interested in something on the others. Downtown loop does all the prime "tourist" stuff.
Take the staten island ferry (for free) to get the best view of the Statue of Liberty.
Walk across the brooklyn bridge to the middle.
Walk around the financial district - wall street, World Trade Center etc - all very closely spaced (the bottom end of the island is very narrow).
Intrepid museum (check its open) - kids love it, whats not to love about an aircraft carrier!
I would avoid Chinatown, Canal street - never understood why people would want to head to these dirty/smelly places.

Thanks for the feed back...Daughter is 17 but she is cool doing/seeing most things, she is into horse riding and shoping (unusual that one!) . Son 13 who is into most things car related and is a keen shooter (clay/rifle). Both happy looking round museums etc. We use the London underground a lot so subway sounds good.

We are room only so some good (not too £££) eating places would be good. We are staying at the Affina Dumont on 34th street.
