New Scootzmobile...
scootz - 27/8/13 at 09:05 PM

Decided we need a second car, so I've plumped for another Quantum Xtreme. Deposit paid and I pick it up on Thursday!

It was a simple decision as the last Xtreme I had was easily the 2nd best kitcar I've had (and it ran my Caterham pretty damn close for the title!).

They have a stainless monocoque tub, a good heater and decent weather protection, so they're pretty practical too... I'll feel reasonable happy plodding through the winter in it.

Unfortunately, it comes with a carb'd Pinto, but I've bought a 2005 MX5 1.8 engine and gearbox to put in it. I'll run the Pinto through the winter, save up for some thottle bodies and an ECU for the MX5 lump, and then fit it next year.

The TSW wheels that are on it will get a set of winter tyres, and I'll buy a set of Compomotive CXR's with sticky rubber for next spring. The only other thing I want to do is paint the roll-hoop and windscreen surround black, and fit a set of GRP seats in case of water ingress. I might also have a go at removing the decals... my only concern there though is that the colour may have weathered and the decals might leave an imprint.

One thing I hadn't thought about though was the length of the MX5 gearbox... it may be that the lever will be too far back to work comfortably. The engine / box will arrive before the weekend, so I'll get a better idea then!

I looked at these as a kit before plumping for the MNR.
I liked the idea of the stainless monocoque chassis and it came as a comprehensive kit.

nice one mate!!!!

having built an old robin hood series 3 (getting rid of it u hum...) I thenbought a pinto powered xtreme now homed in scotland when I snapped up the v8 xtreme !

one reasone I went for the xtreme was due to a full build manual and far less left to the individual builder to get wrong if you know what I mean ! like i no doubt did with the RH that no instructions.. well a dodge non matching video!

easily handles the power, is a bigger than most 7 style cars with a boot and I too run it through the winter.. the pinto one did over 6k miles per year before it went.. 2 great years. stay comfy and keep the padded seats, makes it far more comfortable.. the hood and side screens work really well, so you probably wont get that wet anyway.

I've yet to stop the v8 from leaking oil and the clutch needs a change (which isn't a bad thing as it slipping is like built in traction control!) but the cars are awesome.

have great fun with it

First dibs on the forgone conclusion of a "50% off six months later"...

scootz - 27/8/13 at 09:41 PM

Nope! Its a keeper!

pewe - 27/8/13 at 09:50 PM

Of course what you really need now Scootz is a supercharger on the 5 engine to make it really fly.
Oh and BTW I just happen to have a Mini teflon one F/S

It'll be getting flogged Robert!

PS - that KV6 engine is going to the scrappies soon... do you want it FOC to fiddle with?

I'll be divorced if I sell it Dan. I've been told (instructed!) that I can change its engine to something more modern, but that's it!

I thought you'd flogged that in the end ?

scootz - 27/8/13 at 10:02 PM

A guy said he wanted it (for £25), gave me a date for collection... and then never bothered showing up!

mcerd1 - 27/8/13 at 10:04 PM

well I might be able to find a home for it now

are you around at the weekend?

T66 - 28/8/13 at 08:08 AM

Canny canny - when you dodging down to mine for a brew then ?

scootz - 29/8/13 at 08:40 PM

Picked it up today... a little rougher than I'd hoped, but I guess that's the norm! Some elbow grease will soon see it right!

The drive home reconfirmed my thoughts about Pinto's... I feckin hate them! Horrible heavy, noisy, smelly, rough, boat-anchors! Interestingly, the increase in the engine roar wasn't comensurate with a hike in speed!

BIN BIN BIN BIN BIN!

Thankfully the MX5 engine also arrived today... think I'll have to bring the transplant project forward a wee bit! Does anyone know of any good links (especially about using the OEM ECU - if that's even possible!?).

pewe - 30/8/13 at 09:47 AM

Lots of info about 5's on MX5Nutz , also worth looking at PlanetMX5.
HTH.
Cheers, Pewe10

PS So here's a question to lodge in the back of the collective brain - how long will it take for Scootz to go the whole hog and become an MX5 owner????

scootz - 30/8/13 at 10:00 AM

Cheers...

PS - I have never (and probably never will) want an MX5. Great cars, but just now for me!
