Has anyone got an experience with taking out insurance for a a month or so?
I'm back in the country for about 4-5weeks, before going away again for 2-3 months, and then moving back permantly.
Plan was to just mot and re-insure the car from now and take the hit on the 2-3months, but its now failed and im looking at stop-gap options till I
replace it long term or repair it.

Hire car?
Assuming that even if you replace it you'll need insurance on the replacement, wouldn't it be better to just start a standard year policy? From memory it only takes a few months for those monthly insurance policies to exceed the price of a normal one.
Remember you'll need to send back the tax when you finish, the whole thing will be a massive pita. A second vote for renting.

Does someone else insure it? If so could you be put on as a named driver?

If it has tax, it has to have current insurance. That's the law.
I've used short term insurance to move vehicles and although not cheap, it's cheaper than a full years policy to cancel after a couple of
weeks, or getting tugged for no insurance!!
