car insurance - they make it up right?

Main driver tintop insurance is up for renewal with More Than, £ 251.

I did the meerkats and go compare and AA came out best with £ 179 for slightly higher mileage and lower voluntary excess.

So I ring AA, go through details and despite putting in my occupation, mysteriously it had changed whichh pushed the price up, as well as excesses being different to what was on line; in short no saving.

Next lowest was Hastings. Ring and wait for 10 mins. Ring again, wait another 14 mins until someone answers. We go through the details and told "the prices come from a live site that can change" ... and surprise surprise, the quote is now £ 260 even though it was done online less than 1/2 hour before.

So I ring More Than, select the insurance cancellation option and mention that I have got better quotes for lower voluntary excess (£ 100 instead of £ 150) and higher miles (6,000 vs 5,000). Man does the changes and comes back with £ 186 !!?!?!? WTF - you couldn't make it up - apparently he applied loyalty bonus. (and yes, if you are sitting there scratching your head, the figures don't add up).

It makes you wonder.

I suppose the lesson here is to always ring up, especially if you enjoy being on hold listening to crappy radio 1 type music.

A 'loyalty' bonus? Even though every single renewal I've had has always been higher than the previous years and always beaten by an online quote?

Admiral tried to reduce my renewal last year by offering a loyallty bonus after I phoned to cancel as I could get it for nearly half what they quoted which was almost twice what i payed the year before, but it was still nearly £100 above what I could pay and oddly still more than the quote I got directly from their website so not much of a loyalty bonus really.

It gets even weirder with motorbike insurance, just doing my quotes for the end of the month as was doing one with bennets and I always play about to see what adjusts the price and weirdly I changed the voluntary excess from £100 to £0 and added NCB protection and it dropped the price by £20 (about 11%)when I would have thought doing both of those would put the price up, but I guess people in my age range living in the same area as me who have a £100 voluntary excess and unprotected NCB must make more claims than people with NCB protection and no voluntary excess.

I was with More Than for ages and just used to go throught a new quote every year and it was always cheaper than the renewal..

Now using Swiftcover and it has been going down (slightly) at the last 2 renewals.

Why did you ring the AA? If you'd continued with the online quote you'd now be £7 better off and not have wasted half an hour of your life.

Try quotes starting today and quotes starting in two weeks, amazing the difference that can make!

I spoke to Admiral and spent 15 minutes bare faced arguing with them that they should mirror my ncb from my other car (which is currently SORN but soo on to be alive). Was told flat out they can't several times and quotes were coming in around 300-325 initially (and from the top 10 or so companies). I don't know what did it eventually but I just said "OK well I will find someone who will" and he conceded and applied a mirrored discount, bringing the policy down to 180.
