It would appear that the person who had the garage before me made an arse of paint the concrete floor.

Parts are well stuck down and parts are peeling like a good and proper.

Its a good sized area to take so a wire brush is out out the question. I thought about power washing but it will be messy.

My idea was a concrete grinder like this:

If i need to hire a tool that's fine, just want to get it sorted and get the right tool.

I agree that the angle grinder method would work but this is a large area. Its double garage with at least 50% of the area being affected.

Thinners, and im not joking, I used to have a part time job repainting floors in factory's, and we used to flood the floor in thinners, and scrape the paint off in stripes about 12" wide and then hoover it all up with a large "henry"

Its very messy, and probably not allowed for health and safety, and it melts your wellies/footwear,
but it was in the late 70's

On a big area I would get a wire wheel on a grinder and some kneepads and a mask. Maybe a floor scraper first to get the loose stuff off.

Importantly why has it lifted? I doubt there is a damp proof membrane, seems most people do not bother with garages (I did, and the builder was surprised) in which case you may have issues again......
Get a damp meter and check the floor would be my suggestion. And take it from there.

you can hire scrapers which are like a big hammer drill with a wide blade fitted, horrible job though, the bits fly everywhere.

Don't even consider grinding, the mess is unbelievable.

If the bits that are still stuck down are stuck tight, then scrape off the loose stuff and paint over the whole floor.

Alternative cover the whole lot with a big rubber mat!

I'm in the middle of stripping my garage floor for the same reason although it was me that painted it, tried wire brushing , scrapping etc . Tried a bit of thinners which lifted even the best part of the floor in 30 seconds.No effort and quick without too much mess.

If I went down the thinners route how much would you suggest using for a double garage? How would you apply it.. brush?

Haven't got too far with mine yet but I have 5 lts of cheap gun wash thinners and expect to have some left over when I've finished

I'd just pour it on and start with a yard broom, working down to smaller brushes/scrappers as required.

I'd still look at why it lifted though, as the cause may just be masked temporarily with new paint.

Don't just pour it on the fumes can be overpowering, do a small area at a time

Where i work we have a machine like a floor polisher but it has a big twist type wire brush its used for cleaning around the pits and it takes the oil / paint and any thing else up off the floor .
