I'm going to retrofit some DRLs to my tin top.
Could anyone please confirm whether on new cars the DRLs are switched off when the side and/or head lights are switched on?

I always thought that was the case, but im sure ove seen cars with sides/dipped on and DRLs running.
The installation instructions show -ve to battery -ve and +ve to fuel pump relay +ve which I thought was a bit strange?
On my Octavia VRS they are bright with lights off, they then dim when you select side lights on - they in fact are the sidelights, and stay dim with
headlights.

They should go off with the lights, using a normal relay for this could cause problems if by our car has a bulb failure detection waring light.
The reason for wiring to the fuel pump is that the is will restrict the lights to be on when the engine is actually running, not just when the
ignition is switched on.
However to simplify things a special voltage sensing control relay is available to control the DRLs so they only work when the battery is being
charged by a running engine ie. when the battery voltage exceeds 13.1volts.
You can buy these voltage sensing relays very cheaply on eBay.

the iva manual section 22. Note 6:
Daytime running lamps. The lamps must be connected so
that they switch off automatically when the headlamps are on.
(Except for when the headlamps are flashed).
On my Audi they are bright when the headlights and sidelights are off and dim when they are on. They also dim on one side when the respective
indicator is on but I guess that's only a requirement if they are physically close to the indicator.

To keep it simple I'll go for a normally closed relay fed off the fuel pump which is switched to open when the lights are operated.
