Hi all
Nextdoor neighbour has a VW sharan 1.9 diesel automatic
When it is cold the gearbox does not work properly it jumps gear, slips and is a pita to drive
when its hot its smooth and does everything it should do,
the fluid has been changed, and im told that the levels are correct, but will do that later
any ideas ?

Sure its a mechanical fault and not an electronic one?
My parents T4 auto transporter clonked between gears and randomly changed... spent a lot of money fault finding and it turned out to be a temp sender
on the engine causing issues.... grim...
Have you plugged in Vag-Com to see if there are any errors?
Its certainly worth investigating, i will tell him

It does sound like an electrical/sensor issue if the box is working fine once warm.
There is a lot of knowledge on the various VW forums, which may help you/them.
It actually could be the engine.
If the power is down when cold can have issues at gearbox.
Common for boxes to get changed when actually it's the engine.

Different types of autobox on these if it is the Jatco box then it could be a cracked valve body however Jatco boxes are also very sensitive to fluid
level, which must be checked when the fluid is at the correct temperature, and has been driven and put through all the gears The car must be level
when the flud is checked. The procedure used by main dealers monitors the fluid temperature through the OBD2 output. If the fluid in the box smells
of burnt toast then it needs a full rebuild.
Basically all modern conventional automatic boxes are fragile compared with old B&W boxes mainly because they no longer use any asbestos in the
friction linings.
Correct fluid temperature for checking level in Jatco box is 40 c plus or minus 5 c
