Confused about buying a 15 plate reg in advance
jonabonospen - 15/2/15 at 08:18 PM

Just wondering if anyone has experience of this;

My Mac#1 should be ready in the next month or two and I would like to adorn it with a new 15 plate which has some meaning to me if I have the chance to select a plate rather than just a random 15 plate. So I have found a plate on the DVLA website and to secure it there is a £399 fee. But what I wanted to know is if there is any time limit from the release of the 15 plate officially to when you can register it to a specific car as at the moment I aren't sure exactly when the Mac#1 will be ready.

Obviously between the 15 plate coming out and the 65 plate in 6 months....

You'll have to purchase the plate and put it on retention. The retention will cost you a fixed annual fee. Once on retention it's yours until you chose to put it on a car... no time limit.
Then once your car is registered you can transfer the number provided you get issued with a new reg and not a Q plate.

I assume these are already on retention as they can be purchased now even though 15 plates are not available to be on cars until March 2015. Thats sort of what I was asking.

They're not on retention - they haven't been released yet. You will receive a certificate of entitlement which has an expiry date on it (I suspect it will be 6 months as Coozer says?). If you don't register it before then you will have to put it on retention.
