My normal trick is trying to find something I know I have, can't find it so buy another. Low and behold it was right in front of my face all along!

Very true, but I find that doing that is quite an effective search strategy. I waste less time buying the new one and sending it back again than I do turning the house upside down looking for the original.

Most recent example was that I lost the battery charger for my camera, bought and new one and then found the old one in a shoe a week later. Problem is that I've now lost the new one.

Have you tried the other shoe?
