Estate tow car

Which is the best and most economical estate for towing.

A diesel will pull the extra weight without a drastic reduction in fuel consumption.

Another thing to look out for is the max towing capacity.

I don't see the point of recommendations as a bloke with a Ford says get a Ford etc etc

Mines a v70 D5, fully loaded with geartronic and is an excellent rust free tow car. Terrible turning circle, fantastic ICE

A mondeo will be more economic I expect.

Second Volvo v70 d5 but again check the weights ..

J90rdn - 19/11/15 at 08:13 PM

I tow with a 525d Msport tourer. Big comfy car and been faultless.

jeffw - 19/11/15 at 08:46 PM

I tow with a Range Rover 4.4 TDV8...and it has been very comfy and faultless But I'm not sure I'm helping the discussion

gaz_gaz - 19/11/15 at 08:59 PM

How do you find the gearbox Jeff?
I used my dads 4.4 for a trip to Spa and it seemed to be changing gear every 5 seconds

theprisioner - 19/11/15 at 09:01 PM

VW Kombi Highline nothing better I have found and you can sleep in it .

I tow a 6mtr caravan with a mondeo 2.0tdci, and can average over 40 mpg even towing

spaximus - 20/11/15 at 07:42 AM

I have had a lot of cars, new one every two years 40k plus a year. Best all round tow car Passat Diesel estate. Carry all the spares you want fast and stable.
Volvo xc 60 okay.
Jag X type Estate good but a bit low on weight, had two of these and a bargin secondhand.
Citroen C5 vey good indeed, excellent engine self levelling suspension very very cheap now but a bit risky secondhand.

Mikef - 20/11/15 at 08:02 AM

Diesel Merc estate cheap to pick up, loads of grunt, good mph, and comfy for those long hauls.

J90rdn - 20/11/15 at 08:18 AM

BMW E39

Wasn't the Mazda6 voted best tow car by Caravaners weekly or what-ever ? Hate the things myself but must have been a reason for it.

I have a Transit minibus 2.3 duratec petrol/gas, high top, bed, cooker. Not a racer but economical, comfy, reliable and multi purpose.
It has an awning too, so ok to stay at events overnight. Pulls the trailer and kit no prblem.

Totally agree on the above. Re: ICE - only this morning was thinking that I'm now used to a really good stereo I won't be able to get anything less in my next car. Not really any help for towing. LOL.

That's very good Steve. Is it a very small/aerodynamic caravan?

steve m - 20/11/15 at 04:24 PM

No a 6 metre 4 berth, and loaded to the gunnels with shyte that my wife has to take wherever
