VW Touran 1.9 TDI S - rear speakers

Hi All,

SWMBO has recently taken over a VW Touran T1 1.9TDI "S" spec. From what I can tell it only has speakers in the front, there's no sound from the rear and the VW stereo doesn't have a front/rear fader function.

My question is...will there be wiring in place to fit and connect rear speakers and will I need to change the stereo itself to drive them?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Get an amp, some 6x9's and a woofer.... BOOM!!!!!!

Back in the day (1990s) that was indeed me with some bass bins an amp and a home made cabinet in the boot of my rough as old boots mk3 Escort. Shortly afterwards the car got stolen and the stereo and speakers were stripped from it by the time I got it back from the police.

Now that's made me chuckle, my neighbour wasn't pleased with my noise and told my parents as well. Luckily my parents didn't seem too bothered and told me to carry on as I was.

Back to the VW.

If it is for the kids, I wouldn't bother.

They all listen to their own stuff anyway, or watch videos etc.......
ours always tell us to turn the rear speakers off....

50/50 on there being wiring, the head unit may need to be changed to give 4 channel sound, but it may just be coded to be 2 channel and need recoding with vag-com for 4 channel, a search of the part number may help here.
If you've got radio keys, you can look at what speaker wires come out of the iso plug (most likely a quadlock type), if there are 4 pairs then check at the door pillar electrical connector to see if they are carried through into the door loom, sometimes they are only as far as the pillar.
It'll be cheaper to remove and modify the door loom than replacing with new.

You'll need either genuine speakers or adaptor rings for aftermarket speakers to stop the window from hitting the speaker on full travel.

Thanks Dave - a useful reply with some good items to check!

From looking the head unit is held in place with 4x Torx screws for which I have a tool. I'll be pulling it out over the weekend to check the wiring and yes I have the radio key to check further. From memory I think it's an RCD300 unit, but may well be wrong. If it needs re-coding to drive the rear speakers and add front/rear fade then that's not so bad. However SWMBO does have a hankering for the more upmarket VW head unit that has a larger screen and sat nav (map reading isn't a strong point). Also not a problem sourcing and fitting VW speakers as it's probably easier than faffing with aftermarket units.

We have 3 kids between 8 and 10 years old. Whilst they do have Kindle tablets and do watch/listen to their own stuff the option of being able to play music in the rear and not in the front is really rather appealing to us. Their taste in artists and songs is a little different to that of SWMBO and I

Those torx screws are only covers (rather than actually screwing the head unit in place), you'll still need the hook devices to remove it.

Upgrading to the larger unit may not be as easy as you think, the large head unit in my Toledo took all sorts of connections from various points in order for it to work. And they're not as good as they look either, for example it's likely the maps will be out of date so that'll be £100 minimum. If you are looking for that sort of thing, a self contained third party head unit might be better.

Useful to know! I've looked at the 3rd party units and they seem better value than the genuine VW ones.
