I have been roped in to help some relations whose mother aged 87 has decided to give up driving. They have no idea about selling cart and will be minced by the regular car dealers I am looking for fair valuations that will help them sell it without feeling abused along the way!!
It's a 2005 14 Polo Twister they are the second owners meticously serviced 12 months Mot and 2 new tyres which it didn't really need as of last week

Has been garaged for all of it's life especially last couple of years has covered 42000 miles
Car was ion excellent condition until recently acquired a few scrapes which are more to do with age of driver than the age of car
Will make a very reliable car for someone or a decent first car if you can afford the insurance

Thanks for help with this, any opinions welcome. The car will be getting sold as everyone on the family has their own vehicle already it is located in Knitsford , Cheshire and could well come Back on here in the for sale section once they have a price sorted out

A trader would be looking to buy something like that for around £800 at auction. The true value is rather dependant on where you're marketing it but I'd be surprised if it didn't make over £1400. Possibly up to £1800 if the right people are seeing it.
Similar Polos with average mileage can be had from £400 so to get the best price, you need to aim it at the right market. Although I don't like selling on Ebay, it's a good way find a huge audience and you can really hammer the good points which make it stand out from the other stuff out there.

Quick auto trader search turned up a very similar car at £2300, bang on the private sale price, but guess it would sell for just over £2000 in haggling

Private sale dependent on damage £1000 to £1500 trade in value at a dealer would be around £500

The 2005 polo that I sold last month had a lot of interest at £600, it had done 118,000 miles although pretty clean and hid the mikes well.

If a bit tatty £1000 tops I recon, there are many of them about, dealer will pay pennies.

Paint damage has a major effect on auction value.

As said above it's very often a case of finding the right buyer at the right time. One lesson I've learnt selling used cars is be wary of endless viewers/tyre kickers - they can waste a lot of your time for no return!

From my recent experience trying to sell a clean, low mileage almost immaculate car & a slightly older very slightly scruffy one (one dent, couple of scratches), both small, desirable, low insurance vehicles I think you'll struggle to make more than about £600 - £700 privately.

No one seems to want to buy anything anymore it's all rental/leasing £99 a month or whatever thro' a dealer, who of course can also handle a trade in etc

This is exactly the type of old car I used to look for and would still have if I didn't need the family bus

over 10 years old, low mileage, lived in a garage, small dents and scratches = perfect
all that adds up to a great cheap wee daily driver for someone who isn't fussed by how it looks

so as above I doubt you get much more than £1000 for it - at least not if you want it sold fairly quickly....

IMHO private sale is going to be your best bet, but it really depends on finding the right person at the right time
I'd stick it in the for sale section on here and see if anyone bites (tends to be less time wasters on here)



If not then you could always have a go at one of the banger rallies
