What a car and driver!

loggyboy - 27/9/17 at 07:25 PM

A distintly average driver with a good team of publicists... and a great car.

scudderfish - 27/9/17 at 07:34 PM

He's aping Ari Vantanen with the shielding his eyes thing. Difference is, Ari was capable of winning rallies instead of just showboating.

Amongst professional rally drivers distinctly below average.

steve m - 27/9/17 at 08:14 PM

Where in that video, or this thread has anyone said he's a good rally driver?

coyoteboy - 27/9/17 at 08:21 PM

Yeah I'm afraid I really only see him as a car park king, sub par at any real motorsport but great at showing off when it doesn't really matter. Shame really, I wanted him to do well in rally. I suspect that wasn't even a good peak time either, and given the machine he's in it really just shows his priority. But I guess that's his choice and he's happy with it!

And to negate someone's view because they're an observer, not a competitor, is not really fair. If it was a positive view you'd not be saying "what do you know, you're no winner".

No he doesn't do well in motorsort ,WRC or World RallyX.

Just a shame non of the better drivers off this forum have never had a chance to enter,as they would be champions for sure...........

No,just nowhere was it mentioned he was a good rally driver,so nothing to do with that video really.

Just the way of forums I suppose, bitter/jealous people sat on the sofa

CRAIGR - 27/9/17 at 08:57 PM

Popcorn anyone

steve m - 27/9/17 at 10:03 PM

If the POP is aimed at me, then so !

Ive never questioned what he can do, albeit scripteded and filmed, by a zillion camerars

but what has he ACTUALLY done ?

melly-g - 28/9/17 at 05:56 AM

Nothing, apart from make some really entertaining videos.
I love watching them, they make no sense whatsoever but that's there appeal oh and the cars.
It's all rehearsed over and over but still great to watch.
I thought he might do well in rallying but no he's not, you can't really practise that!

Exactly

Take the video for what it is,the same as all his videos.

A awesome car driven by someone that can handle it sideways very well and the best hillclimb course in the world

SJ - 28/9/17 at 07:03 AM

I don't know whether he is a good driver or not, but I don't like the whole tyre smoking thing he does. In my view a good driver would go fast without all the drama.

nick205 - 28/9/17 at 08:08 AM

I have to go with the "OK driver, great PR team" camp on this one I'm afraid.

I've watched his YouTube videos and yes they're entertaining. IIRC he did one around San Francisco. I was more intrigued by how the city seemed to have shut down and vacated the venue myself.

Before anyone says it - No I can't drive like that - I've never been blessed with the space, film crew, money or more importantly the car to do it.

I find Ari Vatanen driving a 205 T16 in a proper rally event more appealing to watch. Overpowered cars, naff all spectator discipline and kahunas of Titanium coated in Titanium, with a Titanium buff for good measure. I'd better stop about Group B rallying before I go off on one.

No one has claimed they could do better, just that he's not a particularly great driver when compared to others in the motorsports events in which he has completed. Are you saying this is incorrect and that he is in fact a driving god?

He has plenty of wealth and sufficient driving talent to make a spectacle, but an awesome driver he is not.

If that makes me a bitter/jealous person sat on a sofa then fine by me. I'll take that over having an outrageous man crush on a minor celebrity.

gaz_gaz - 28/9/17 at 10:44 AM

Arguing about this, I can only assume there's a shortage of MK Duttons on ebay getting peoples backs up

Bunje - 28/9/17 at 11:06 AM

on a slight sidetrack Gaz is that your new car in your profile picture

gaz_gaz - 28/9/17 at 11:10 AM

Hi Ben, Yes it is mate. So far so good :-)

Bunje - 28/9/17 at 11:23 AM

wicked i saw that when it was for sale i was tempted myself. with the sequential gearbox i bet its immense

gaz_gaz - 28/9/17 at 11:33 AM

It's quite a car and very well put together, It's not been without its niggles though,
Main problem though has been the induction noise with the throttle bodies hanging through the bonnet,
It blows up noise meters everywhere i take it, Static noise at Brands was 95db, Full throttle drive-by was 108db

Tucked away now for winter with a full tear down and rebuild to IVA standard about to commence,

Bunje - 28/9/17 at 11:37 AM

awsome hopefully ill see you on some tracks next year then sorry for the thread drift Kev

Irony - 28/9/17 at 11:58 AM

Ken Block has taken his so called 'average' driving abilities and turned them into a fantastic way to make a living. He's a marketeer, a show off, and self promoter and a fantastic sponsorship activation expert. He also does some natty driving.

So he wasn't good enough to be a world rally driver. He knows it and changed careers. I for one applaud him for his entertainment

i wonder if his r888rs lasted a full run or with a bit of video editing they were swapped

Several sets of tyres I'd think. Most likely donated by the tyre companies as well.

If the thread was titled 'is ken block a awesome driver?' you would have a argument, but it's not and no one asked for people's opinions on if he is a good/bad driver/failure at WRC etc did they?

Nice to see someone with some common sense

scootz - 28/9/17 at 05:54 PM

There's only so many doughnuts I can watch before I get bored. He's a trickster. An entertainer.

TBH, I'd rather watch a Danny Macaskill video - he's also a trickster rather than a competitor (in his field), but his scenery backdrops and soundtracks are fabulous.

Macaskill is a big hit for me and my sons. I've even sought out some of his soundtrack music to listen to as well. Truly admire his bike skills (which make me look like a toddler on a bike). As said the locations and scenery are pretty awesome too.

Agreed, I don't think I will ever tire of watching his videos. Some of the stuff he does seems to defy physics. I reckon there are quite a number of people that could do what Block does given enough money, not so much with MacAskill.

Angel Acevedo - 3/1/23 at 05:21 PM

I have just received an e-mail stating he passed away.

Is it fake??
