What's the scrap value of a road car these days?

My MR2 roadster failed its MOT today needing about £600 of work. I was planning to put it up for sale as soon as it passes and reckon that clearing £900 after the cost of sale might be a good target. So if a scrapper would offer my £300, I might as well take it. What is the scrap value of a car these days?

We sent a SAAB 93 to the scrappy middle of last year for £120, probably get around £90 now!

My suggestion would be stick it on ebay, the running gear may be valuable to someone, or someone might like a project to return it to the road.

I've scrapped a few Sierra bodies after stripping them. I'd say £300 is somewhat hopeful and more like £100 is what you'd get.

Can you get the car to the scrapper?

If not they may charge to come and get it lowering the money you get for it.

As craigdiver says ebay'ing the running gear may be the way to go, but somewhat more effort and hassle involved.

Thanks. This sounds about right. What's the best way to eBay an MOT failure? An auction starting at £99 or a £300 buy it now?

The car drives so could be delivered to a scrapper.

Have a look on ebay what other MR2 are going for, I reckon stick it on with the starting price being (realistically) what the minimum you want for it. make it clear no mot and buyer to collect and you may be surprised.

Sell it spares repair. You should get half its full value.

Sounds like a good idea. Just had a call from a scrapper. They valued it "between £125 and £140, collected". Ebay should do better.

I scrapped a car recently, they cam to take it away (Ha Ha etc.) £60 with steel wheels £80 with alloys
I just can’t be arsed to strip them down

£600 to sort the brakes (rear?)?? Sounds like £200 in parts at the most. Can't you do it yourself?

Thats £100 in parts, get your spanners out, get MoT and sell on. Or If it is worth a safe £900 should easily get £500 as is.

Trouble is I can't get a car in the garage of my new house. (Annoyingly). I don't fancy dropping the fuel tank on axle stands and ramps on the front drive.

Three phonecalls this eveing via autotrader.

The first asked how much I wanted for it, so I told him the asking price. He didn't want to pay that but wouldn't make a counter offer. Eventually I made him and he only wanted to pay £250. I told him I wouldn't take less than £350. He kept hanging round as if I'd suddenly give in.

The second guy tried a similar game. I told him I wouldn't take less than £350. He said he wouldn't pay over £300 so said he'd leave it.

The third guy asked about the car. He told me he'd looked up the MOT history and what it had failed on. He wanted to know about the engine then the body work. He huffed at my £350 but said from my description of the car and of the condition of the engine, he trusted me and has wired me a deposit.

I'm sad because my car's gone and I'm left with £150, after what I've spent on it this week. It probably marks the end of a 13 year period of me tinkering with cars for fun. Still, where one thing ends, another usually starts.

Depends what it is, if I remember rightly the gen6 Celica metal backplate alone is 250 quid and only available from Toyota.
