It was work's Christmas do last night and I parked on a side street with single yellow lines. I walked the length of the street on both sides and there were no signs for the single yellow lines along either side. I got a parking ticket. I was there half an hour before the free parking time, apparently. The other streets in the area are pay and display.

Is the lack of signage a valid reason to appeal? I don't want to have to pay the full fine after a failed appeal. It's a local authority ticket, £70 or £35 if paid in 14 days. What do you think?

My opinion, and I've got away with a ticket in private car park run by parking Eye so it is doable, is since this is public road, you will have a battle trying to prove lack of signage.

You can sometimes park on a single red or yellow line, but many assume there are standardised times – that's a mistake. Restrictions for parking on single lines will usually be shown on accompanying road signs - make sure you scope the area and check before you park

I think this is a dodgy area. Apparantly unless there are signs saying otherwise the single yellow line rules are as per neighbouring areas. Where we live they're cheeky- they enforce rules re single yellows that even the Ombudsman doesn't agree with!!

Pay the £35 and move on...

Another vote for paying up , annoying I know but is £35 really worth all the grief ? Can you pay up and then appeal or at least get your local paper on the case ?

i know how you feel, it,s a matter of principle , if the council are up to no good, expose them.

Appeal to the council first. Sounds like you have good cause and back it up with photos. They should cancel it.

If you appeal it should put the 14 days on hold.
If you then appeal to the ombudsman, it is up to the council to provide supporting evidence, and this also halts the 14 days so it that feels you then pay the £35.
(the above relates to a bus lane ticket we got, coming from a side road with absolutely no signage apart from the on road stripe, and heavy traffic covering that, and the bus lane ending in about 30M Council rejected our appeal but caved when it went to the ombudsman)
