What Vehicle Checks pre purchase
ReMan - 20/3/21 at 03:39 PM

Looks like search is not working at the moment sorry.]
Hope you are all good

Anyway, looking at buying another private tin top.

It all looks OK, but what online/paid or free checks would you use these days before you part with your hard earned?

gremlin1234 - 20/3/21 at 04:28 PM

check previous mot's.
though not perfect tends to give an idea
free check:
https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

edit to add: also gives an indication of mileage.

Interested as I'm about to replace our family tin top.

Are you buying privately or from a trader?

steve m - 20/3/21 at 07:56 PM

As Gremlin said above, MOT history says an awful lot about an owner of a car
An owner who is diligent, and trustworthy will have an immaculate MOT history, as anything that was an advisory will be fixed before the next MOT
It also shows if any Factory recalls are kneaded

Obviously a car under 3 years old you can not check

I'd pay for a full RAC check on the car, it's £15 but they guarantee their data up to £30k in claims but read the terms. I've done this many times including with Cazoo (who I'd recommend and would use again). £15 compared to the price of a car isn't even worth a second thought.

Although I did buy an Astra for £40 and a pack of beer so I suppose I wouldn't have bothered then...

Private. If it was trade I,d expect them to produce a HPI/Vehicle cheek.

I’ve done the tax/mot checks
Yes not met him yet, that’s tomorrow, but all seems genuine

Aggreed Mr W.
There are som paid sites though, that don’t actually give you any mor info than you can get for free as they just link to gov info, so any recommendations are good.

gremlin1234 - 20/3/21 at 10:12 PM

one other thought,

if it is a ford, made since ~2000 we can check the number plate and the vin match up via their etis system for independent operators.

Can you ??

what do you need

gremlin1234 - 20/3/21 at 10:47 PM

give me the no.plate

edit: no.plate should be enough to find vin. or give me the the vin. and I should be able to find the no.plate

you can try this, give me the no.plate of a random ford near you, I shall give you the vin, and you can check it against the vin in its windscreen

Electric or ICE? I know cars depreciate badly but if it's
ICE prepare for the worst depreciation you've ever known in the coming decade

Not ready for electric, nor in my budget yet anyway

Likewise I'm not ready for the budget so I'm getting a cheap EV for 95% of my journeys (local) and a cheap derv for anything longer range. The savings in fuel pay for the tax & insurance of the derv with loads left over. Big savings overall.

I would like a V8 before petrol is dead and the one I want is north of £25 K used , so any drop in value is a plus for me.
Won't be bothered about re sale value just the running costs as I can see the government upping the cost of using gas guzzlers to force us into EV's.

Funny that’s on my list too. never owned my own V8. Still enjoying the Flat 6 and ran out of space for any more cars, but I have one car that’s ripe for a V8 Engine swap, else as you, may just have to Take the plunge even if it’s an old cheap yank before they’re outlawed by tax

V check gives one of the most comprehensive checks for a tenner.

That only applies to bakery vans if they are worth a lot of dough.

V8 was on my bucket list too.
My trusty SAAB 9-5 turbo estate started to play up so I determined to buy a V8.
I was surprised to find BMW did a "cooking" version of the M5 Touring in the form of a 550i M-Sport Touring, still has 360bhp & 360lbs/ft though
I managed to find a one owner 68k miles for sensible money.
Now been running it for a couple of years and whilst it ain't cheap to run like the SAAB I can forgive it 's expense just for the exhaust note alone.
There are 450i's around as well but in both cases check for dodgy valve stem oil seals i.e blue smoke on start up and over-run plus front suspension arms take a bashing.
Any advice just PM me.
Cheers, Pewe

That seems a plan. Though I think the number of longer journeys I will be doing is right down now the kids are properly off our hands. So am tempted to use a restomod car for that and swallow the fuel hit (poss saab turbo engine) as zero road tax and cheap insurance.

But what is a cheap EV? Leaf seems good value. But never actually been in one. The fact they have been around for years is encouraging.

I did cursory look a "cheap" leafs too as a not too small small car
Still too frightened!!
£5k seems to be the cheapest without some issue with the battery.
Leased batteries £50 a month? New battery £4000, just seems like not cheap?

What is the cheap EV option if that is not it?
