Ha Ha! Snap - absolutely spot on! (It didn't quite make 150mph however!!!)

shindha - 16/8/11 at 07:48 AM

I wish I could find a picture, I think it was painted with a peach dulux

shaft - 16/8/11 at 08:14 AM

a Raleigh Grifter......

looking back, how the hell did they make them so heavy?

kevmcdo - 16/8/11 at 08:25 AM

I remember how heavy my old Grifter was, cycling up any hill was a nightmare but going down was a hoot. Stable as an oil tanker in comparison to my mates Chopper though!!!!!

Peteff - 16/8/11 at 08:56 AM

When I was 12 I had a Hercules pushbike with rod brakes

Slater - 16/8/11 at 09:38 AM

I too had a grifter. I think it was a prototype BMX, the frame was made with heavy gauge scaffold poles and the seat was a house brick covered with thin rubber padding.

The 3 speed sturmey archer gears were great, the "slip" gear between 2nd and 3rd caught me out a few times and caused my nuts to crach into the crossbar.

scootz - 16/8/11 at 10:08 AM

Ah... Raleigh bikes of the late 70's and early 80's! Unbreakable!

If Tonka made bikes...

sucksqueezebangblow - 16/8/11 at 10:21 AM

A Lonnie Toft board with Gullwing trucks and Bones wheels. Didn't go that fast (probably 40 mph or so max) but lost a lot of skin and broke some bones trying!

MikeRJ - 16/8/11 at 11:26 AM

A Suzuki B100P converted to a field bike with longer rear shocks, plastic mudguards and a huge rear sprocket.

liam.mccaffrey - 16/8/11 at 11:38 AM

I had a Kawasaki KE 125, which had been converted to full field spec with no clocks or electrics and the knobbliest tyres in the world. My dad lovingly cut the corners off the knobbles with a stanley knife so it would go through the swing arm

I still have this bike in my shed

mangogrooveworkshop - 16/8/11 at 12:10 PM

First bike at 6 was honda 125 then we had a scrambler of some buffalo brand to tall for me so i would put it against the wall to start it..
.. then a move to the uk killed bikes for a while till dad bought the rd 400 whilst he had the bmw 600/6 with the touring pack. a puch moped and a fsie yamaha moped
then set out to get the uk bike licence so a c50 step thru was bought for 12 quid..... that went for ever till i moved back to africa.... then a 125 honda a 600 suzi then a 1000 suzi then the big crash destroying my right leg, ribcage , and a large amount of dermis off my back and legs then ziltch

splitrivet - 16/8/11 at 12:46 PM

me too, although mine wasn't exactly new when I had it... (might still have it the shed somewhere)
re the weight: I think they filled the tubes with lead

actually that might be the same year I got the only new bike I've ever owned - a dayglow green pug (we are talking about 1994 here) although I'm colour blind and thought it was yellow for years
and back then my dad was always tring to get me to ride his majesty TY250 - but I always liked 4 wheels better, so he made us go-kart type things out of old lawnmowers
