Whoose 3cyl engine is in the Daewoo Matiz
stevec - 21/1/08 at 09:04 PM

As title, what is the engine in a Matiz 3cylinder.
It looks a little Japanese to me.
SWMBO has just got one as a runaround.
I will buy her one for the other foot next month
Steve.

Originally designed by Tickford originally, I believe.

Nicked from the Matiz Owners' Club site:

"It's a lively and economical performer, powered by the M-Tech 800cc engine developed in co-operation with Tickford Engineering of the UK."

My wife has a Matiz - not a bad little runaround, although I can't get the seat far enough back to be really comfortable. It would be better with the 1000cc engine now available.

Daewoo are South Korean. The engine is an 800cc (796cc to be exact), 50bhp three-cylinder engine.

I believe also Ricardo engineering had something to do with it......

My mates mum had one with air con. With that on in the summer it barely moved!!

On the wife's car we call it the 'turbo boost' button! If we're going up a significant hill we turn it off, and you can feel the car accelerate...

Here's a bit of trivia for you - many years ago, Fiat took a concept car to a big car show. It was intended to be a replacement for the Fiat 500, but they chickened out of putting it into production.
Daewoo bought the design, made it a bit more practical with ordinary doors instead of a folding-upwards one, and called it the Matiz.

I'm surprised, I'd have thought it was related to the corsa lump, Daewoo
being part of GM.

blakep82 - 21/1/08 at 10:55 PM

daewoo is now chevy, chevy is GM, GM is opel/vauxhall

didn't one of the corsas have a 3 cyl engine? i'm just guessing...

davie h - 21/1/08 at 11:19 PM

The Matiz was a development of the Daewoo Tico which was more or less a badge engineered Suzuki Alto (which has a 3 cylinder 800cc petrol engine).

Semi-official history of the Matiz here.

Somewhere on the Net, ther eis an article / site of a chap with a Turbo'd Daewoo (1 litre or less) churning out something like 150+ BHP..

It might have even been an article in PPC mag

But it was a very favourable article. Even I was amazed.
