Hi all, I have recently removed my carbs from the manifold and found that almost all of the thakery washers have self destructed, are these washers nessesary or is there a more available(and cheaper) option?
I currently have the Weber plastic spacers with o rings between the manifold and carbs

yes they are avaialble and what you have experience seems to be a common problem.

search for eurocarb on ebay (will check name is correct; e-mail: sales@dellorto.co.uk] ) - Matt is dellorto/weber agent and can supply these.

there is an alternative that is some sort of rubber spacer but a bit more expensive; I went for the thackery spring washers.

Again the insulating spacer comes in at least two varieties. first sounds like what you have and comprises 6 mm or so thick spacer with grooves for O-rings each side. over time the rings swell up from the petrol and can pop out resulting in air leaks - lots of popping on the overrun and crazy idle being symptoms. It is next to imposswible to fit them back but new rings are pretty cheap. The spacers can crack too.

the other type is thin metal sheet spacer with the rubber bits bonded on so you won't get swolllen o-rings

To answer your other question, yes, they are very necessary, as they provide a cushioned mounting for the carb on the fannymold and help stop fuel frothing in the float bowl.

I had the same problem with Thackery's..... mine had shattered too!

I have since put on the 'bobbin' style (looks a bit like a small rubber cotton reel), and all is well.....

Get the rubber alternbatives, much better. Burton have them, part number rd266. 7.50 for a full set:

£ 7.50 a short length of rubber hose should do the same job.

5/16 or 8mm fuel hose and normal washers may well do the trick as a locost option. 7.50 isn't exactly going to break the bank though!
