Old gauges - new Zetec engine?
imagineer - 21/11/12 at 09:35 PM

I'm building a Haynes, Type 9 box with a Zetec 1.8 Blacktop.

Is it possible to use an old set of Smiths gauges/instuments (60's MGB) with this set-up?

Cheers.

Yo would need the relevant senders and the small rectifier box that controls voltage to some of them. The speedo would also require calibrating to match the ratios and wheel sizes you are running. Vol gauge and Tacho should be okay you may have to solder a diode in line due to the way the pulses work as it may read only half of the revs

Many thanks - you learn somethign new every day.

Want that classic look, without paying £400 for a set of new gauges.

There was one company who used to advertise a set for £199 with a mechanical speedo to suit the sierra

I fitted a zetec/type 9 in a Triumph spitfire. Bodged a triumph angle drive to the gearbox to get the speedo working, nad it was about 5% out. Better than before!
The rev counter worked fine with megajolt too. The fuel and temp gauges usually work off a regulated 10V supply, use the std old one or a 10V transistor. Simple enough.

I run a complete set of Smiths on my Zetec. Tacho runs off the megajolt.

Tacho will probably the RVI (current sensing) rather then RVC type (voltage sensing) so you'll need to change the guts in the tacho to work with the Zetec coil pack. Possibly use the guts from a late 70's MGB inside the early casing? I've done it with a 100mm Smiths gauge; nothing more tricky than drilling a few more holes in the case and swapping the gauge face over.

Depending on the location of your gauges you may need to change the bezels on the guages as the v section chrome bezels do not meet the IVA. I have changed mine for some flat bezels that when installed lay flush with the padding on the dash.
