Is an alfa 156 JTD really a sensible option?

Looking at spending about 3.5k on a medium size diesel thats gotta do high miles (500 miles per week), had decided upon a golf, but just keep looking at the alfa's, they look so nice and i know its a cracking engine, but the Alfa's reliability tag is telling me to stick with the golf idea. Are the alfa's really that bad??

I would go for the Alfa, Just make sure its been properly serviced and looked after. You need to have a good interior if your going to do 500 miles a week and I think you get a better one in the Alfa.

a friend of mine has a garage, and the same engine in the fiat is so crap i wouldn't touch with a barge pole, he is always changing or rebuilding, i think the same engine in the vauxhall is fine, don't know about the alfa engine, but i would say it would be like the fiat not the vauxhall, stick to the VW, or go for seat, skoda or audi with the vw engine you liked, vw will have better resale as well, a high mile used alfa is worth scrap money, a vw is worth good money sort of, but yes the alfa has the looks.

Personally I would be looking at the mondeo in the clasifides, they are suprisingly fun to drive.

Head says VW, heart says alfa, its all just gravy until someone actually buys my car anyway!!! Mondeo is a sensible option, but thats what i'm getting rid of as want something smaller, although mine is an estate.

you'd still get a Mk1 TDCi without too many miles on the clock for that kind of money, if you look around a bit
