A4 1.8T running like dog

Climbed into A4 this morning and it was like a 1L fiesta.
No power at all.
Any suggestions that do NOT include the
bloody quote for £550 for a new turbo
i've just got.

any fault codes, check the plugs first.pop the pipe off for the turbo and have a feel to see how much play is in the shaft aswell.

check all hoses, there is a good chance its just a boost hose. Had the same issue with my 306 and it was just a small boost hose causing the problem. good luck

Vacuum hose/s split blown off? .... different car I know but I had a similar thing with my Saab and new silicone vacuum hoses (about £5 to replace the whole lot ) transformed it. I have had just one go previously mind you and the car went like a 1.6 Nissan Bluebird

Don't the AFM/MAF's play up on these?

Try disconnecting it to see if it makes a difference?

Its not in a limp home mode is it?

There is also an electronic boost control valve which might be playing up (and meaning you get little or no boost)

And as mentioned an air leak will kill the performance (but you can often hear it)

Normally if the turbo is knackered you'll get other clues like smoke or whistling etc.

Try to get it on VAGCOM to look for faults

Could be coil packs - easy replace when you know from VAGCOM which one(s) are causing problems.

Also on the top of the engine there might be a breather hose from the top of the cam cover. This had split on mine causing rough running - dodgy signals to the ECU

Lastly the throttle body could need cleaning

Take out the LH archliner, the intercooler hose clips are very weak and pop off with amazing regularity. We get it all the time - we reassemble a car after a front end replacement, the owner has the car back and 3 days later they complain that the car is running badly.

As an eternal optimist, this one may cost you as much as £3.70!

Thanks for the advice.

Forgot to say this is a 1997 model.
All bit and pieces appear to be attached OK.

Changing air filter and plugs as we speak.
Dont know if it will help but probably needed done anyway.

Cheers

coil packs are a known issue on 2001 and onwards, so may be that on your earlier one too.

Update :

Car hooked up to computer.
Logged 3 faults.
N75
AFM
and
Crank position sensor.

The N75 was reading zero volts
on application of accelerator.

New N75 valve has cleared down
the 3 faults above but car is still running as slow as ever.

Computer is now reporting Cam position sensor fault (open to positive).

The car would happily drift along at 2000rpm in 5th but there is nothing there
when I put the foot down and its a struggle to move off on a hill start.

Anymore thoughts?

Thanks for the comment so far.

Does it sound like it's misfiring?

No miss fires.
Runs the slightest bit lumpy on idle but never cuts out.
Would a dud coil pack not create a very uniform sounding miss fire?

Anybody have a comment on possible issue with fuel filter?

Cheers
