insuring a maltese import
any ideas on whether to tell an insurance company that a car is a maltese import?
Maltese cars are completely uk spec, unlike jap cars, and its only the service book that gives it away.
Would just tell them but they only usually have "import" or "non-import" options, and as its a subaru impreza,
"import" would generally be jap and thus no-doubt add t o the premium!
anybody done it?

does the log book say previousely registered overseas ???
if so i would say you will have to tell them,

V5's don't say that, they just have the date of manufacture, date of first uk registration and "declared new at first
registration" on them.
If it was a used import then there would be a date gap. Logbook is away at the mo (new owner sent it off after buying the car) but 99% certain that
there is no date gap and it was new at first reg in the uk.
It certainly has 0 previous owners on the logbook and was owned by 1 guy in the uk.
The car was imported brand new by motorpoint in derby from a subaru dealer in malta, then sold by them, then at 2 years olf taken as a trade in by
them against a new one, and the new owner has now bought it from motorpoint..................
So technically a maltese car, but the spec is identical to uk, and the car was first registered in the uk!

Malta is now EC and they drive on the proper side so I don't think they can legally discriminate against it.
I know of somebody that had a great deal of trouble importing a RHD Rover 620 in from Cyprus which at the time was non-ec, it turned out Rover 620
sold in Cyprus were either built in Japan or exported to Japan then re-exported to Cyprus but the spec was normal UK spec. MG-Rover going bust in the
middle of it didn't help.
