Son in Law tin top woes - Astra 2.0 TD

Son in law's 2001 astra just blew its turbo bearings and squirted the contents of the sump down the exhaust.

Have found a replacement from a 30,000 miler, just wondering if anyone has changed one, and if there are any gochya's, looks fairly straightforward, but, as usual any advice greatfully recieved.

you may need to get a new cat if there is one fitted as this will be toast as well..

It didn't overspeed and damage the engine did it?

Diesels are notorious for running out of control on their own lubricant, often 'til they self destruct. They'll also run on any combustible vapours in the atmosphere - hence diesels working in refineries and chemical plants have air inlet cut-off valves to allow them to be stopped.

diesels dont need cats, although most are factory fitted with them. They are only smoke tested at MOT's.

Thanks chaps, it will run on but hasn't revved itself to death, he got it home and it wouldn't switch off, so he easily stalled it. Its probably driven 2 or 3 miles since the turbo bearing noise started, fortunately he's no boy racer and drives very sedately.

We'll see what the weekend brings when I pull it apart.
