Tintop (focus) help please

My dad drives an '06 Focus auto, 2litre duratec jobbie. I quite like it, apart from the slushbox and leccy parking brake...
Anyway, today he popped by ad asked me to have a look as he believes the temp sensor is playing up. The gauge reads cold sometimes, and "normally" others. And when it reads cold, it wants to idle at 1100rpm. Not ideal, and sounds like the temp sensor is playing up.
So.......where do I find the temp sensor?? he reckons they are about a tenner, so a good place tp start if I can find it! or indeed other suggestions?

Cheers
Clive

common sense would dictate its in the thermostat housing
a failure would cause the high idle and also poor mpg

Hmm, any pointers to where I will find the therostat housing then (assuming that is where it is, these days one can never be sure!)
As in front or back of engine....etc

Folow the top radiator hose back from
The radiator and it will most probably be at the end of that where it meets the engine???

Its fitted into the alloy T piece fixed at the back of the cylinder head tucked underneath.

The T piece takes water back to the rad connects to the expansion and heater
