Diesel Chipping
Bumped into a long time no see buddy who was telling me about the good results he's had from one of those plug in chip doohicky's on his
diesel Jag.
Had a look on fleabay and the Italian jobbies look good value for money the thing that turns me off is their Italian.
The thing that turns me on is one of the skinny babes in their Ad might come and rub their greased up nubile bodies all over me shortly after
purchase, but knowing my luck it'll be a big fat mama dressed in black whose had a Tagliateli overload.
Anyone else bought one and are they OK if they got rubbed up by the nubile chick f@ck whether it works my order is on its way.
Cheers,
Bob

I had one of those on my 3 series (the chip, not the chick ) and it made a huge difference to the power delivery - much easier to overtake. Mind how
you wind 'em up though, or you will visiting the fuel pump just as often as the petrol heads ..... while towing your own personal little black
cloud behind you

these plug in 'boxes' or 'chips' are rubbish in my opinion. They simply give the ECU false information so they inject more
fuel. Much better off with a good re-map done on a rolling road. More power usually and because the ECU knows what its doing, better economy. just my
2pennies worth.
a lot of these boxes sold on ebay are a little resistor networks in a box, usually with a variable pot and sometimes even a couple of LED's to
make it look complicated. big con really
edit to add: definately worth trying if theres a vague chance of it been hand delivered and installed by the as mentioned girls

had good reports about http://www.angeltuning.co.uk/ - the Alfa Romeo chaps seem to think they are pretty good at the remapping thing.
Prices seem to start at £275 which is probably cheaper than the good quality boxes which you are asking about.
I haven't done it on mine because I want the clutch to last a reasonable length of time - an extra 40 BHP and 65 ibft of torque will eat the
already marginal clutches on most modern diesels.
As a clutch with a DM flywheel can cost £1200 nowadays it's not the cost of the 'chipping' which cost the money but the damage it
does afterwards to the clutch that worries me.

A friend of mine chipped his VW van with a plug in module from ebay.
It fired up fine and was OK when he took it for a 5 min test drive in the dark. He said there was a noticeable lift in performance and the
engine sounded nice and smooth. All good thinks he
It's his wife's daily driver for the school run, shopping, work etc and not wanting to enter a lengthy conversation on the modification he
opted not to tell her
The phone call he received the next morning @ work must have been classic. She'd driven the kids to school in a cloud of black smoke with a
somewhat hesitant engine
Lucky for him he got away with removing the module and refitting the OEM VW one with no damage done and wifey pleased and impressed that he'd
managed to "fix" the van by himself
She doesn't know to this day

Avoid cheap ones, most are just a resistor in a box.
Buy from a reputable tuner, eg Diesel tuners UK http://www.diesel-performance.co.uk/
Not cheap, but worth the difference.
Mate of mine, had his Volvo S60 re-mapped and it made a huge difference.
Has sold that, and got a Volvo V50 with the 2.5 D5 Turbe Diesel.
He fitted one of DTUK's boxes, simple plug in job and one wire to the battery. Very very simple. and has gone from 48 to 60Mpg, and the power
increase is dramatic. more so is its actualy delivery, rather than the actual power gain.
Of course if you dirve with a heavy right foot the mpg will obviously suffer.
He got 48mpg average over 1500 Miles towing a 30ft mast on a trailer (Abt 1 ton)
driving to the outer hebrides and back. (I was with him so know it to be correct)
Over that distance without the trailer (different year) it was 55mpg, for the whole journey to isle of Mull (all from Cambridge).
Overall they are worth doing it properly, with a decent bit of kit.
Cheers

If you call them up you'll get a discount, I got the best £380 module delivered including VAT for £305. It's arrived this morning and
I'll fit it later, I'll let you know what it's like.
I wouldn't put a cheap one on my car that's for sure.

Well, I've had the tuning module in the car for a couple of months now and it's really superb. Pulls harder from lower down the rev range
and keeps pulling - they reckon around 90lbs of torque more and I can believe it. It's got 4 different maps, though I've only tried the
one and it seems great so I'll probably leave it.
And I'm getting at least 3mpg more as well, which is a 10% rise from the usual 30mpg and I drive it like I stole it - so I'm a very happy
man and would thoroughly recommend it.
Got mine here:
