How do I find info on a French registered vehicle?

Right then, just a quick question.
I have a 1940's American army lorry, I'm restoring. It was used in France as a fire engine until the late 80's- early 90's.
I dragged it out of a yard(in derbyshire), where it had stood for about 10 years rotting.
I have a French number plate and a re-stamped French VIN(not the original manufacturer's VIN).
I have no paperwork with it, and the owner of the yard had non either, he bought it after the first UK owner had died.
Does anyone know how I can find the vehicle's details, as I would prefer not to have a Q plate on it if possible.
What is the French version of the DVLA?

Cheers Frank.

I think the number plate system in Frances is done regionally, so you will need to find out what region the plate is from and contact them...this may help....

Hi, thanks for the offer, but it's the other way round, this lorry has come over to the UK from France, about 18-20 years ago.
I'm trying to find out a definate build( or in this case rebuild) date, because without it the DVLA will issue a Q plate, instead of an age related registration.
I know what year it was built, due to slight differences in the bodywork, it's a 1942 model. But that's not goo enough for the DVLA, they need an exact date.

So, I was hoping I could find the information out from the French DVLA.

It's a long shot, I thought it might be worth a try.

The lorry is a Dodge WC62, 6x6 weapons/troop carrier.
I'm not building it to show, I'm building to work.

Cheers Frank.

As above, I would try to get some info from a historic military vehicle club. I am pretty sure that for old cars, DVLA accepts information from recognised clubs on car's history, year of manufacture, etc. where e.g. an LHD British car has been reimported and needs to be registered for the first time in the UK so if you can get something from such a club you might have a chance?

Good luck
