For a gas conversion the 4.0 is best. Loads of DIY kits available. If I can fit one, anyone can.

Jag v8's have soft valves so you need to fit a kit which bleeds a little petrol with the gas. I fitted a vogas kit to my XK8 2 years and 60,000
miles ago, its been fine and very economical, I bleed 5% petrol.
Later 4.2's are the same engines but better, more rigid castings I believe but the same rule above applies. 75 litre tank instead of the spare
wheel, gives me around 250 miles on fill up, can get around 65 litres from empty in it.
I took some pictures of the install if you are interested, Cheap motoring I spent ~ £1000 putting it in using all new bits.

Lots of second hand kits around really cheap. I paid £300 delivered for the one I'm fitting to my GT4 and it came with a half full toroidal tank
of gas. I have managed to re use everything except the one short length of pipe from the filler nozzle to the tank! It will have cost around £305 with
the extra pipe needed. Make sure you get a later sequential set up as they are more efficient but a little more work to fit. Although you can fit the
kits yourself, If your skills aren't all that, have it checked by an engineer or a gas fitter.
Lots of info from these places

The 4.2 Supercharged V8 is a fantastic engine. Ive got an XJR with this engine and it delivers masses of silky smooth power that just keeps
flowing.
Im busy developing a manual conversion for this engine using Jags getrag box for a friend of mine
Speed is just a question of money !
How fast do you want to go ?
