XR4x4 chip or 24v transplant?
I have a 1990 XR4x4 2.9 and wondering whether to look for a chip for the ECU or maybe put a Granada 24v lump in. What do you lot think?

Chip will likely be a waste of time. In fact, they were k-jet weren't they? So won't even respond to a chip?
Cossie 24v conversion would be much nicer!

the 2.8's are k-jet, but the 2.9's are EEC IV
but I still wouldn't bother tunning it - unless you find a TT twin turbo kit

No that was the fitted to the 2.8 xr4i's and xr4x4's (and capri's/granadas) - There is the the odd one out of the bunch from the
granada - the 2.8efi
2.9's were EFI ford EEC IV.
Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a
car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes
and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.

pretty much as above EXCEPT, they are great cars!! I've had a few, and they get close to the "one car fits all" in a way that
nothing else I've had does.
Cheap, tough as old boots, quick enough for day to day driving, tow loads, sleep in the back etc etc, I love em!
24v is not a 5 min job but well worth it, the 2.9 12v really needs forced induction to do much really.
Retro RWD is the way forward...........automotive fabrication, car restoration, sheetmetal work, engine conversion

So all I need now is a 24v scorpio with the twin intake, after it a bit of reading it supposidly has a bit more grunt.

cosworth BOA engine is the earlier type 24v, fitted to the pre-frogeye scorpios.
BOB is the later one with the dual length intake setup, fitted to frogeye scorps.
The BOB is the better engine, but you'll need aftermarket ecu to run it. You can separate the BOA engine loom out from the rest of the car and
keep the eec4 ecu with that, but I would go BOB and fit an aftermarket ecu. If you went for an emerald K6 I know that Dave Walker has maps ready to go
for them as we did one in a capri not so long ago.
They make around 250hp completely standard on aftermarket ecu with no airflow meter.

You're quite right. Having thought about it, I remembered. The 2.9s had a different plenum and dual air flow meters.
XR4x4 with a Cossie V6 is deffo on my list of cars I'd like in my 'collection'. Afterall, I've got an XR2 and an XR3, so an
XR4 (x4) is the logical progression!

I have the BOA fitted, running MS with BOB cams and Vectra injectors, makes 238bhp and 250lbs on a good day, plus on a good day it does 20 mpg, :-(.
Were I to do it again, I wouldn't, there are plenty of four pots that will give more power and use less fuel, Saab 9000 springs to mind, among
others. IMHO Ray
To make a car go faster, just add lightness. Colin Chapman - OR - fit a bigger engine. Chippy
