Tin top advice please

I am in the process of changing my DMF and clutch. After 8 hours of struggling i eventually removed gearbox from engine and noticed a bit of oil in the bellhousing, i put it down to spilage whilst removing it.
Now i have managed to refit most of the parts back i have found i need to bleed the hydrolic system for the clutch to work.
My first question is , is the brake resevoir used aswell for the clutch.
I have a small leak somewhere in the brake system , or so i thought, that i have been unable to find.
Question 2, could the oil in the bell housing be hydrolic fluid.
Question 3, does this mean i have to fit a new master cylinder to the gearbox. If so that means i have to remove the bloody gearbox again.

Yes a lot of hydraulic clutches use the brake fluid res. So it would certainly point to the cylinder leaking

Dunno what type of car you have (ford??) but I reckon you need to replace the slave cylinder in the box, if you've been losing brake fluid gradually then thats probably been where its going, possibly even getting onto the clutch and causing it to slip. We never change clutches without changing the cylinder when its in the box as it just doesn't make sense to the customer financially. probably not what you wanted to hear but thats how it is

Its a VW Bora tdi 150 and les the slave cylinder is mounted in the box.

If your losing brake fluid then its got the be the slave cylinder. They use the brake reservoir for the clutch.

If your flywheel was knackered its probably done the slave in anyway and would explain the leak.

It's false economy not to change the slave cylinder/thrust bearing on anything that uses an internal unit. One little tip if you have problems bleeding the clutch , if your not getting any fluid through remove the flexi pipe from the reservoir and check the outlet from the reservoir. I once spent hours trying to bleed a Passat clutch , fitted a new master cylinder and still couldn't get any fluid through, the reservoir out let was still sealed. Haven't a clue how it was bleed in the factory

All done and dusted now. Gearbox was out within twenty minutes and back in ,in the same time. Everything seems to run fine and no juddering from the engine anymore.
Saved myself near £1000 if i'd taken her to VW .
