Yep scary known that for years. If you watch Indy racing on a regular basis you will notice that quite often when doing a pit stop, the pit crew will suddenly throw a bucket of water over the car and you think 'Eh' what the ****' then you realise that someone thought there might have been a fire.

I have just taken delivery of an engine and spared for my toy - an Aurora IRL engine set up to run on methanol........I think I can live with 600bhp and petrol after looking at that!

I seem to remember that it became standard equipment for teams in the champ car series, to have Infra Red cameras so they could see if a fire brook out, and who or what was getting too hot.

why don't they dope it with something that is visible when it burns!!!

Just like natural gas doesn't smell but they dope it to put smell in it so you can tell when there is a leak.

Madness.

In the late 60's they had an Indy Car Race at Mosport, as fire crews and equipment were scarce in those days, the drivers of the support races were asked to go to the marshals stations in full driver uniform in case of a fire.
They then put about a gallon of alcohol in a large flat metal container and lit it. There was blue flame about a foot above the liquid and a heat haze above that. We were told if you see a driver rolling on the ground he is on fire.
The most amazing thing to me was after practice one of the crew on A.J. Foyt's car was spraying a liquid on the body parts to clean off the oil and rubber dust, I had seen this same spray bottle used to squirt a liquid down the injectors to start the cars, When asked what this wonderous liquid was, his respose was "that's what you boys run in your cars, It's gasoline"
