F1, following on from BenB's post.....

As per title, I didn't want to hijack Ben's thread so started and new one! http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=147017 />
I have found a REALLY old thread which I started on this (closely related) topic a few years back.

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=92563

I was pretty much in a minority of one back then, but seems that the 'hot' discussion I provoked then, has some more support now?

I reiterate my point from then; the clever people in formula one, with more latitude to innovate with engines using turbo's etc, will creating technology which we can't even imagine (outside of what we know now) which will benefit us all!

I got 'flamed' for this a few years back, anyone have a view now?

I know, it was quite a moment!

Have to agree the technology available and the brains behind a high percentage of F1 teams will make this possible as it was in the 80's but probably with much more effect.

The link isnt working for me for some reason.

It was probably only because, on balance, he was disagreeing with more people than he was agreeing with!

Im with you by the way, F1 has to stay relevant to justify the wasted resourses. Its a powerful mechanism for developing technology, and efficiency is a hugely important area these days.

Basically F1 needs to justify the amount of money Ferrari want to spend.

I can't see how they'll get it to work though. I hope they do find some magic formula for fuel efficiency in high power petrol cars because it means I can ditch the diesel But I can't see how they will- okay a turbo will give improved volumatric efficiency and make a powerful 1.4L engine but it only does this by putting more petrol / air mix into a small engine IE it still takes fuel....

The magic formula is increasing the effective compression ratio and reducing parasitic losses.
