Check this months top gear mag, you could get yourself a brand new Lada Niva, though it won't do 40MPG.

What do you actually want the 4WD for? As you don't seem to want an off roader and given the other requirements I'd have thought you'd be better off just just getting a 2WD car.

For the Record the Panda is a great car and for your budget you could have a new one and do 40 plus on petrol, and if you drive one wearing an oldman hat, people stop and move to let you pull out and don't tailgate you (You have to wear the hat though. It all goes back to normal when you take off the hat). I'm told the Hat trick works in Micras aswell.

Only 15mpg

£115 Fully Comp Insurance

Goes anywhere - Can be fixed with sticky tape, fencing wire and a selection of hammers.

And yes it pulled the Corsa out of the ditch ....

PS Top picture - choke out, pure petrol pouring out the exhaust...

No tick tock , its drives really nice - just like the last time I drove a half track.

My wife hated the Lada, ugly smelly thing, however after two heavy winters, Tatiana is the dogs knob all terrain, all weather transport .....

When the world grinds to a halt because of the snow, the Niva steps up to the plate.

The Landy 90 parked behind me 2nd pic , couldnt follow the Niva up the next stage of the RTV trial - Dergs Nerb

In fact neither did the one infront !

I'd have thought the Octavia would have got 40, or at least high 30's if you're heavy footed.

Bora/Passat?

its a nearly car .

my volvo does about 30 mpg petrol , i would have thought the diesel being about 4p a litre more expensive needs to be doing around 50 mpg to make it worthwhile

My Subaru legacy diesel does around 50mpg. 52 on a long run, 48 in daily use. It's currently showing 48.7mpg avg over the last 3700 miles after hoofing it about, including through the snow and ice last month.

My parents are also having this discussion at the moment, they had an x type but they don't like it. I have sent them to look at the audi a3 quattro. Let us know what you thought.

I drove a Black Edition 2wd version of the above car from York to Glasgow and back again yesterday at legal speeds and got an easy 55mpg.

My question would be what are you looking for there is a lot of difference between a 4x4 Pickup or Landrover and a Diesel Impretza or 4x4 Golf.

What are you using it for
Why do you need 4x4
What size of car do you need
What type of car - saloon / estate / MPV

A good Skoda Diesel or an Audi Diesel will get 50+ to the gallon but not 4x4 but saying that you wouldn;t take it up a field
however a Range Pickup / L200 etc will get 32 to the gallon and will tow 1-3 tons and go across fields.

A Skoda Diesel would not be suiatble for a Farmer or a Fencer to use as a work vehicle
simalarly a L200 would not be handy if you were a motorway REP or were alway about town.

I wouldn;t look for a car that was 4x4 and 40 Plus to the gallon, I would narrow it down to cars I like then work out which best suits my needs. if MPG is important then consider this.

Scot's do it better in Kilts.

MK INDY's Don't Self Centre Regardless of MK Setting !
